All of these people ppl e that are outraged don’t realize their every day activities are being monitored just by driving around with the smart phones on. Also anytime you walk into a major airport your face is getting scanned. Your checked bags are being opened and rifled through.
Public highways are just that public and there isn’t a right to privacy. Any officer can run your tag anytime he wants. These Flock cameras aren’t hitting live DMV databases. They are hitting hit sheets of stolen vehicles, amber alerts and BOLO.

ALPR isn’t new. It’s been used since the 90’s.

They do a whole hell of a lot more than that, and it has been admitted by Flock in its own testing and demonstrations.

I’m speaking of ALPR in general. It helps solve 1000’s of violent crimes per year. It helps find missing kids, dementia patients etc. it’s a valuable tool. Whether you agree with it or not.

If Flock and similar companies are breaking no new technological ground that advances the surveillance state beyond what it is already capable of, why the push for these new systems? We don't need them if everything it does is already being done. It offers no advantage, per you and others who share your opinion. Therefore, it has to be a waste of taxpayer money on a needless system that is at best wholly redundant.
Why do we need it?

I think you are missing the point here. Law Enforcement organizations have ALPR and have had it for years. That's one thing.
Having the government team up with FLOCK (a private company) is something else entirely. FLOCK is collecting all this info as a third party non-governmental organization and then selling that info to other private organizations. Obviously they can buy their own land, put out their own cameras and capture this info in 4th Amendment allowable ways. That's fine.
But I don't want my tax dollars and my government assisting them.
Second point, ALPR is a system that captures some pretty specific data. FLOCK systems are capturing way, way more. For instance, tracking bluetooth identifiers and WiFi signal identifiers. Grabbing facial recognition. Things that are way more intrusive than my plate number.
