Flirt with disaster long enough

This is a good LSU team and things are certainly looking up for future seasons, but pump the breaks. We have managed to convince ourselves that this is an elite team the last several weeks (myself included), but it just isn’t the case.
Yes this team is tied for first in the SEC, yes this team is 21-5 and yes this team can beat anyone. That said, take a look at the schedule.
- 4 OT games in conference play
- Only 4 conference double digit wins out of 14 games
- Consistent slow starts and miraculous comebacks
This team is mere points away from being a middle of the pack bubble team. In November we were just hoping to get in the tournament and win a game or two. We were talking about how awesome it would be to make the Sweet 16 and how much of a success that would be. Now we’ve been seeing daily threads about how we could be a 1/2/3 seed.
This team has been fun to watch and I’m hoping for continued success, but I’m reminding myself that you don’t build a power overnight. I’m also remembering that you don’t have to be elite to make a deep run.

The officials haven't helped, and I'll hang up and listen

We went to OT like 9-4 and didn’t even try to go inside.

Bub,
Conference play comes down to close games, sure we've gotten lucky and tonight we didn't. Uk and Tennessee could say the same things as this.

It was one conference loss in OT. Nothing has changed at all. If people seriously thought that LSU was going to win out then that's where the issue is, not losing a game.

So if we beat Tenn, are we elite then? Will you come back and start a new thread?

I already said we can beat anyone. All I’m doing is stating the reality. I’m not knocking this team because what they have done this season is remarkable. They don’t quit, they aren’t scared and they have had to constantly grind out everything they’ve earned.
This is no doubt no longer the brand of basketball we’ve been force fed of late, but we have a long ways to go and there isn’t anything wrong with that.

quote:being elite is about consistency. we beat UK at rupp, then turned around and barely hung on at Georgia and lost at home to 14-11 UF. we have a very solid team and no ones denying that, we just struggle with consistency

Are we perfect? No. But no team is. Every team, even the elite, struggle with consistency. No team in America comes out and blows away every single opponent.
Duke was a big favorite at home and lost tonight. Are they elite? Yes obviously. Even they are 100% consistent every game though.

I understand that, and i’m not saying we need to be perfect. what i’m saying is you don’t see the elite teams struggling with inferior opponents game in game out. we’ve struggled with some pretty bad teams man, you can’t deny it.
duke lost to North Carolina and a hall of fame coach (without the best player in the nation). we’ve lost to 3 different teams with 11+ losses. that’s the difference

Duke got blown out at home as a double digit favorite. Sugarcoat that all you want but that’s what happened.
I’m sure if we were in Dukes shoes right now, you’d still be saying we weren’t elite.

the fact that you’re trying to compare us to duke is laughable

It was just as example of an “elite” team.
I’d like to know the list of elite teams right now.

duke, gonzaga, virginia, tennessee, michigan. the only team on this list with a bad loss is michigan. bad loss meaning quality of opponent, not score wise. look, we have a good team. my point is the teams above aren’t losing to teams with 10+ losses

You forgot UNC... obviously
Posted on 2/20/19 at 11:07 pm to JustLSUit
I didn’t forget anybody. they’re a very good team that also struggles with consistency. see how that works?
