Texas A&M vs. LSU would be an awesome season opener for our LSU Tigers. Thoughts?

I like the permanent opponents idea.

My take:

LSU - Alabama, A&M, and Ole Miss
Alabama - Auburn, LSU, Tennessee
Florida - Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky
Auburn - Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State
A&M - LSU, Texas, South Carolina
Texas - Oklahoma, A&M, Arkansas
Oklahoma - Texas, Missouri, Arkansas
Arkansas - Texas, Ole Miss, Oklahoma
Tennessee - Alabama, Florida, Vandy
Ole Miss - LSU, Mississippi State, Arkansas
Mississippi State - Ole Miss, Auburn, Missouri
South Carolina - Georgia, Kentucky, A&M
Georgia - Florida, Auburn, South Carolina
Kentucky - Florida, South Carolina, Vanderbilt
Vanderbilt - Tennessee, Kentucky, Missouri
Missouri - Mississippi State, Vanderbilt, Oklahoma

They were a season opener for several years back in the day.

I don't like big games for season openers. I prefer a warmup game at least to get the rust off and kinks out.

Correct. LSU open the season with A&M - 1959, 1962, 1963, 1964, 1965, 1968, 1969, and 1970.

Also 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989.

Also 1992, 1993, 1994, and 1995.

Great opening game match-up.

Thanks for the help @Bomont

Should have happened when A&M joined the conference. There would have been no need for off campus openers and would be one of the big season opening games nationally each year.

Our idiot admins back then bought into the Thanksgiving game poison.

Arkansas or Missouri would be a better Labor Day trip.

College Station is a big 100 deg cow pasture in early Sept.

That 1986 opener against heavily favored A&M was epic. Hodson and Harvey William's debut. Sammy Martin housed a short crossing route, Michael Brooks with a late pick 6. The student section was apeshit crazy. My favorite Tiger Stadium game of all-time.

I’ve always preferred them in the last game of the year over Arky

I've always felt it's great for team morale and energy to have a big game at the beginning of the season.

The grind of summer workouts seem to go by faster.

So you’re ok with playing A&M in the opener. Got it.

I was at the 1987 game in college Station... The hottest game I've ever attended.

LSU won 17-3.

"The '87 Tigers were coming off a Sugar Bowl season, and featured stars and LSU legends like Tommy Hodson, Wendell Davis, Harvey Williams, Eddie Fuller, Eric Andolsek, Eric Hill, Mark Jackson and Nicky Hazard."

NO. I've been to College Station in Sept. & nite or day, the heat is miserable.Pretty sure no coaching staff would want to open a season with a presumed Top 10 team, especially a conference team.

It's so much more exciting though. As long as the other team doesn't have a tune-up game, I don't see the issue. With everything being equal, may the best team win. It makes practice leading up to the 1st game that much more important.
