This. It's an improvement for sure. But let's see how they do against the barn this week.

You realize South Carolina beat Auburn, right?

mizzou avg yards to go 3rd down - 9+
cocks avg yards to go 3rd down - 3+

That's what happens when "O" takes care of business on 1st and 2nd downs.

Everyone seems to forget the amount of 3rd and longs Myles faced due to the lack of a run game. I think TJ completed 3 passes on 3rd down. One was on a 3rd and 3, the second was a red zone TD to Marshall and the third was the longer TD to Marshall.

TJ was great Saturday night but it's not like he was being asked to convert 3rd and 8-12 all night.

Fist 3 games included how many dropped passes? I remember one game in particular we had like 6 that were right on the money and flat-out dropped.

Another thing to account for was Brennan dealt with 13 drops in the first 3 games, Finley dealt with 0 drops in our game this past weekend. That's another huge difference where the receivers just played much better as a whole.

Questions. How many bad passes were thrown in the first 3 games? How many bad passes were thrown in the last game? How was pressure handled by QB in the first three games versus the last game? Which QB got rid of the ball quicker to offset any pressure? Which QB threw before receivers were wide open versus waiting until receivers were open?

I agree that Myles should remain the starter when he is completely healed. Then there should be an honest evaluation as to which QB gives LSU the best opportunity to be successful. That would also require additional evaluation of Finley's play going forward.

No one, even those with all of the excuses about why Finley was successful versus Brennan, can argue that Finley didn't have a much better first game as a starter than did Myles. Not even close. Myles improved greatly over the first three games. However no one can argue that Finley, a true freshman, was more calm and collected in the pocket than Myles, a junior. Now its on Myles to get well and hold off Finley. Imagine Finley improving from his first game like Myles did. Off the charts!

offense was 8/10 on third down against south carolina.

Thats what having 54 rushes for 270 yards will do for that stat

To me, usually, a good third down pct is more about your run game than passing game

Also just checked, 5 of the 8 first downs were made directly with a run

I'd imagine the distance to go was also shorter. Against Missouri we had a ton of 3rd and longs.

lots of execution issues putting us in third and longs

Lack of run game and 1st down play calling. I went back and looked through the box score, and Finley was 4/5 on 1st down passes. Key here being, he only threw the ball 5 times on 1st down.

Brennan was 11/21 on 1st down passes against Mizzou.

Barely above 50% passing on 1st down leads to a LOT of 3rd and long. Being able to run the ball and pick up at least 4 yards makes the game much easier.

Moving forward, I'd like to see Brennan operate like we saw Finley do against USC. Be a game manager and take what the defense gives you.

Lots of go routes on first and second downs putting us in third and longs. One of the things that drove me crazy in the first three games was seeing us throw deep balls on 1st and 2nd, then throw a 7 yard stop on 3rd, WR gets tackled 2 yards shy of the marker, and we punt.

If we can get even 3 yards on first or second down by running the ball, it makes a huge difference on third. If you can get 5-6 yards from a slant on first or second, even better. I saw a LOT more quick, short passes this week.

I posted this in another thread, but it bears repeating:

Third downs vs. South Carolina:

3rd & 3 or less: 6 attempts (5 run, 1 pass)
3rd & 4-6: 2 attempts (2 pass)
3rd & 7 or more: 2 attempts (2 pass)

Third downs vs. Mizzou:

3rd & 3 or less: 1 attempt (1 pass)
3rd & 4-6: 3 attempts (3 pass)
3rd & 7 or more: 6 attempts (6 pass)

Play calling was immensely better

LSU called a lot of the same plays they ran the 1st three games. it seemed like TJ finley makes a decision and gets the ball out a lot quicker than brennan. the o-line will look bad always when there's long developing plays and brennan holds onto the ball too long. I think a lot of his stats are deceiving as far as passing goes.

I'm not saying they didn't run some of the same plays but if you couldnt see that the gameplan was much different then you're just ignorant.

Its a lot harder for Myles to find open receivers when we're completely one dimensional.

Play calling made the difference.

Hope LSU continues to have more quick release passes and screen game. That really proud the field for running and rpo action
