I’m sure this has been discussed at length, but it looked to me like the defender was across the LOS and Moore 100% did the right thing by touching him for the offsides call. Did we ever get clarity here? Was he not across the line? Had he gotten back by that point?

Edit: Found the penalty rule, needs to be an immediate reaction

quote:

VI 1/10 @ A-25. Defender B70 is lined up with his right hand and helmet in the neutral zone. As the play clock winds down, restricted lineman A77 reaches out and touches B70. RULING: Dead ball foul, false start by A77 resulting in 1/15 @ A-20. In this play the defense is lined up in the neutral zone, and there is no immediate reaction by the offense, and then the offense subsequently moves to touch or contact the defender and is a false start on the offense (Rule 7-1-2-b-3).

So I guess the issue was you have to have an immediate reaction?

It was a slightly delayed reaction

Palmer kept saying that he should've snapped the ball and saying he only reached out and touched the guy implying that that is not enough

But I always though players were told to reach out and touch the guy if the defender jumps, maybe that is an outdated rule and something changed and I just did't know

Either way, I was calling Palmer an idiot

Pretty risky if you're QB isn't expecting the snap early and he fumbles and the refs blow the call by not calling it.

The defense can move back, but if the jump in causes a move or the oline reaches out and touches him because of it, then it should be offsides, Moore should have snapped it but the touch should have been enough

Not very well. My understanding was if a defensive player is in the neutral zone, and an offensive line flinches/touches him, that’s a penalty on the defense

A surprise snap doesn’t seem to be a smart thing to do to me

additionally, if they are saying the defender was not offsides and our center reached over the line and touched him, would that not be a penalty on us?

That play going without a flag at all seems impossible, maybe the refs were just like "ah we fricked up" and let the play go on like nothing ever happened

I mean those types of penalties are not reviewable so if they did not call it at the time they cant go back and fix it

I know the announcers kept saying this but I completely disagree. It’s 4th down.

If you snap the ball and the ref doesn’t throw the flag, it’s a likely turnover on downs.

If you reach out and touch the guy and they don’t call him offsides, it’s a 5 yard penalty.

The refs blew the call either way and it’s pretty egregious.

I thought they called a delay of game on this one?

The defender touched Moore…therefore, an encroachment penalty should have been assessed. In fact, I believe Moore on the sideline, talking with Kiffin, motioned to his helmet saying “he touched me”….thats why they didn’t snap the ball. It should’ve been blown dead right there.

Because the play clock ran out. Not because of the contact. They completely ignored the contact.

Not if the defender touches the opponent. That’s encroaching

Well yea if the defender does touch someone it’s blown dead.

In this case Moore did touch him when he jumped in the zone and it should have been blown dead, if he got back before the touch then it would be different but the fact he jumped and we had any movement from Moore should have been enough to draw the penalty.

ETA didn’t see the part of Moore saying he was touched first.

That’s a pretty bad blown call the second should answer for

They are unless they're the center. The center should snap it for the free play
