And the problem nationally is that it's an absolute joke that people would spend that much money on a football coach but can't be bothered pay professors of the university the team supposedly represents.
LSU academics and athletic program can now go into the toilet together because King Alexander is worried about public perception.

We are fricked with this guy as our President.

DId you read what he said? It doesnt matter where the money came from the public perception is that the school is battling financial issues and they can raise 20 million bucks in a few days for a football coach.

If they can do that for football, who is in charge of fundraising for the university?

Yeah LSU is really struggling big time. I wonder what poor F King's salary is?

With a $600,000 annual salary, LSU President and Chancellor F. King Alexander ranks in the top 10 percent of public university presidents in the nation in base pay.

In fairness, Alabama is also investing in their academics.

Correct, through increased admissions. So as long as they keep that pace up they can afford to keep bonding out projects.

But as soon as revenue decreases or plateau's...watch out.

How can you blame alleva here? He was trying to save the program and got undercut by a short sighted a-hole.

This.

Alleva had this coup lined up and ready to go and Alexander neutered him publicly.

Maybe he should ask one of his colleagues about financial decisions. The best investment in university history

Why is that his strained logic that "the public and legislature don't understand" it's private money, apply to how much we pay Miles ($5M/annually)to stay?

Oh, but it does, I'm sure. He can't do anything about the current contract. If he's still here the next time a contract is in play, I'm sure he'll apply the same logic then as well.

Dude is clearly playing the card that he has to focus attention on the public funding of the University side of things.

What's the old joke? "When 90,000 people show up to watch a college student take a test, I guess people will vote to properly fund universities" or somesuch? Looks like Mr. Alexander has figured out a way (potentially) to *make* people care.

"You want me to sign off on paying $5 mil a year on a coach? Well, you better pressure your legislators to give us what we want."

Doesn't matter. The fact that our boosters can pop out $25 million over football games while academics is suffering speaks volumes about a university's priorities.

He's doing two jobs, FWIW. So if you look at it that way he's woefully underpaid.

Smart decision. People will blast him, but it's still real money people. Our academics are struggling to stay afloat yet we were fine with ponying up 20+mil to make a football coaching change? I mean people have to have some kind of perspective here.

Are you fricking blind?

LSU wasn't paying for anything. Completely privately funded.

It's not your money, dick.

There is no point...there is one simple question, how much money did LSU itself save as a result of not canning Miles? Answer: ZERO
unfortunately our state values the yearly budget way more than the future outlook when handing out funding

the public perception issue is a problem he largely created with his fear mongering comments.

so this is no vote of confidence for Miles at all, really. it was a "people will be mean to us if we do it" kind of decision.

pretty much. Way to hand over some great negative recruiting ammo to our competitors, "they wanted to fire the guy, the president just didn't want to spend the money. You're going to go play for him?"

King.

I suspect that a lot of the people in this thread are not LSU alumni.

My business degree from LSU helped me to a successful career. I think that many here value LSU for its football team and little else.

I agree with him. Yes a change would have been good especially Jimbo but just reading the comments on social media and news active site. He is right.

The majority are idiots and could not differentiate the difference in money from the tax payers for education and the private money for athletics.

Those of us here know the difference but the overwhelming majority in this social media age didn't and wouldn't listen to explanation either.

He was between a tick and a hard place and made the decision that would keep the shite storm away. The reality is that even though athletics is a major part. He is looking out for the university as a whole
