The answer is twofold.
First, its to protect your fingers from getting jammed.
Second, its to keep them from getting crushed by cleats (metal spikes to the fingers are dangerous)

But does that give the runner an advantage when stealing a base?
Not really. I would argue that it hinders the runner. A lot harder to slide away from the bag and grab it while going past with a mitt.

There have been debates about which effort is faster to the bag, but it seems the feet-first slide is inherently safer. And think of all the money they could save on oven mittens.
The head first slide is both quicker to the bag and allows for more nuance on the slide.
If I’m trying to steal second I want to slide as far away from the catcher as I can while presenting as small of a target as I can. So if I go feet first to the back corner of the bag the fielder can tag an upright foot or a calf if I slide feet first.
If I got head first the only target he has is a hand and an arm that are laying flat on the ground. Making it harder for the defense is the name of the game. If it was safe it wouldn’t be a sport we would just call it golf.

the loud color helps contribute to a visual distraction to the pitcher

Color very contrasting to a white base = *
Length ~ 3" longer than a normal human hand = +
Protects a normal human hand while sliding into a base = +
Take it from here and you have your answer

Protects the hands during a slide and for some reason the kids think they look cool. I follow a guy on YouTube that makes fun of kids coming up in baseball and it's a pretty constant target ha

The most useless piece of baseball “equipment” to ever exist!
Posted on 2/16/25 at 9:05 pm to Rohan Gravy
Many years ago in a canoeing accident, I tore a tendon in my thumb.
The doctor called it 'gamekeeper' thumb. It requires surgery to fix.
He said that baseball players who steal a lot of bases often carried their batting gloves gripped in their hands so their thumb would not catch on the base during the slide.
The new gloves lower the risk of tendon damage.

Best to just make a fist rather than fingers extended out with gloves.

There was a time when runners actually slid into bases feet-first
I mean, they still do.

Is there really a debate? Because there is a clear cut correct answer to this. Shouldn't be a very big debate.

Your lack of understanding of it doesn't make it useless.

I would hold my batting gloves in both hands making a fist. That’s how long ago I played college baseball. That protected my fingers from getting jammed.

The slide into second base in Sunday’s LSU game that was reviewed caught my attention. The LSU runner had the glove on his left hand but slide with his bare right hand extended to the base.
