Crazy to think of what Bogalusa was back then and what it is now. Lots of success stories from back then.

used to have a Chinese restaurant on Nicholson which was still in business up to 1994.

Was this Chinese Bandits restaurant that was on Lee just short of Nicholson? Directly across from Mike Anderson’s. It later became Portobello’s in late 90’s and no idea what it is today.

Proud to see you old guys chiming in
Mom was pregnant with me during the run of the Chinese Bandits. Wish I'd have witnessed them first hand.

I was 11 in 58. But, the Bandits were special to me.

The fact that they were basically third string, made their success even sweeter. Since they didn’t get as many reps, when they were turned loose, they were wildmen. Gang tackling was a standard. I remember them stopping the opponent when the White Team couldn’t get r done. The roar of the fans was higher for their efforts.

I offer this as more of a tribute to one of those Bandits.

Emile Fournet is remembered in my Good Times.

It was a great ploy back in those days. Couldn't wait till the bandits came out. Nothing like that today.

It was electric - nothing compares to it before or since.

I really wish we still had that NCAA scheme = makes college sports the way it ought to be = compete for your school with the athletic passion of the moment.

Great memories - and sad to see so few of those pioneers fading from the scene.

ALL STARs = all of them.

Not in our minds they were not - of course nobody compared them to the First Unit - but they were actually more popular than the GO team.

One of my cherished memories was when we went to a bowl game vs "Clemson??" = the coach boasted before the game that = "we will wait til they put their 3rd team in and wipe them out" -=== or some such verbiage as that =

CB's crushed them.

I happened across a picture of the original Chinese Bandits:

Kneeling: Mel Branch, Emile Fournet, Tommy Lott,
Duane Leopard, Gaynell Kinchen. Standing: Andy Bourgeois,
Darryl Jenkins, John Langen, Merle Schexnaildre,
Henry Lee Roberts and Hart Bourque

Pretty funny that a white guy would turn the legacy of being an LSU "Chinese Bandit" into owning a Chinese restaurant in Baton Rouge.
