It’s a bit of a stretch to say 2018 was a great team.
They had talent but they were not championship caliber yet. Burrow showed promise but he hadn’t taken the step to being elite yet.
if we had a real offense, 2018 likely wouldn't have won the title but would have been a great LSU team
we didn't have a real offense b/c of O. having E as our OC was idiotic and the difference b/w 2018 and 2019 shows the level of mistake

Why do so many of our fans just despise Ed O? I don’t get it.
Simply put, he's a salesman/con man. His singular claim to fame as a coach is as recruiter. He can talk a good game, and sell people on stuff (he gets kids to come here, he can fire up the room when he pitches something).
But he lacks a lot. He doesn't have the in-depth knowledge to implement a system on either side of the ball, and he doesn't have the situational in-game awareness to call a game. He will never win the chessmatch side of the game.
His concepts of "program" is to copy stuff he's seen work here and elsewhere. He doesn't have his own vision.
I'm not saying this to bash him. I do think he's very good at asking "what do you need?" and then addressing that. But I don't think he's the guy that says "here's what I need", and then crafting things to that vision.
This works when you have a 2019 season come together- high level coordinators, lots of talent, add the right parts. But that doesn't sustain- the coordinators do the heavy lifting, and want more credit (and money). Someone else comes and scoops them up, and we're left with O, trying to sell a new group things. He may get another good group and make another run, but all he's doing is gathering the pieces.

I also think it's fair to point out that if we had some legit offensive coaching that year instead of the AARP rotary club, we would have won 11 games.
Possible. But who was responsible for the offensive coaching staff?
Better than Canada who had the personality and communication skills of a horses arse

Finishing in a NY6 bowl and a top 10 finish in a season where you legitimately had the hardest schedule in the country is just OK? Jesus
Yes, it was OK.
Why do you think it was better than that?
Given LSU’s talent and stature over the last 20 years, 9-3 should be considered just an average, OK season.
We were never in real contention for an SEC or national title.
I’m not gonna kiss Ed’s arse for doing basically the minimum.
And these preseason rankings you keep hanging your hat on are worthless click bait for the most part. So who cares.

You were saying? At least look up stats if you don’t know anything.
It’s obvious which year is the outlier, but people can’t get past their disdain for O. Not to mention the outlier season had a ridiculous amount of extenuating circumstances and bad luck.

The offense in 2018 wasn’t better than Canada’s.
2018 offense- 402.1 ypg
2017 offense- 411.1 ypg

2017 offense- 411.1 ypg

I’ve heard the Woodward Pelini push from people in the program. Loooong before I ever stepped into tRant.
See this is where I don't buy it. You're close enough to the program to be hearing all of this stuff, clearly a die-hard LSU and Coach O fan, and yet only made and account in the premier LSU sports message board 10 days ago?
Yeah you're either someone's alter or you're here to push a narrative. You're not here for actual discussion. If you were you would have made an account years ago.
Funny enough I’m neither. I’ve just avoided this thing because I heard it was worse than the comment section on WAFB. Honestly not that bad. Plus I wanted to see what it’s all about. Did not disappoint. I’ve had a handful of posts talking about things other than Ed O. Im just new here. Simple as that.

How was 2018 great made mediocre? They were picked like 4th in the west.
before Burrow was available when O was staring down the barrel of Justin McMillan leading to a 4-5 win season and his firing
Burrow was a miracle for O on every level

Use it and it would make your posts easier to decipher.

I love O, but unfortunately we live in a "what have you done for me lately" society and it's all about winning now! As good as Saban has been at Alabama, those fans will turn on him in a second if he starts losing some games. Fans don't understand the difficultly it takes to win at the highest level, so it's easier to just bitch and complain. Our fans are no different than any other fan base. We win and everything is wonderful! We lose and everyone becomes an armchair QB and complains and moans that everything is horrible and the HC usually gets the blame. LSU fans are no different than the rest of the fan bases in the country, except our tailgate food is clearly the best in the country!

Also doesn’t take into account the 7 OT game vs ATM.

I’m
Not asking you to kiss his arse. You can discredit rankings all you want. All it does is make you look ignorant. Nobody gave LSU a prayer that season.

quote:The schedule is brutal every year. This is the SEC West. But why was 2018.so brutal? Auburn finished 7-5. Texas A&M wasn't an amazing team that year either. So was it brutal because we played Alabama at home and at Florida in Dan Mullen first year after Florida went 4-7 the year before?
Apparently people who actually know football and analyze thought differently about LSU in 2018. Especially considering the absolutely BRUTAL schedule we had that year.
quote:I'm not shitting on Coach over finishing in the top 10? I'm just not praising him because he did what he was expected to do. As I pointed out earlier as long as you win one game between Auburn Alabama Florida and Texas A&M, you can pretty much sleep walk into a 9 and 3 record. Oh and he beat a non power five football program to get to 10 wins.
Are we supposed to shite on him when he finishes top 10? Because that’s what you’re doing.
quote:the previous year's LSU finished 9-3, 8-4, 9,3. So yeah he kept the same record as the previous 2-3 years. Is that extra special or something?
ESPECIALLY considering where the program was the previous few years.

By the way, 68th in scoring offense, 59th in YPG, 107th in the country in first downs made.
The offense, objectively, was mediocre at best.

The fact that you think 18 is even close the the level of 19 shows just how much of a stupid O arse kisser you are.
18 was not a bad season, but it wasn’t a great one either. You could see the promise the team had and there were hints that 19 might be special. But that’s it. Otherwise it was pretty meh
And Ed, the supposed master motivator, never really got the team to play above their level.
Yes the AU win was great but that sure turned out to be a vastly overrated AU team.
