I don’t think we will be starter shopping in the portal this season. We will need depth if Nuss leaves, but they aren’t going to jeopardize Collins’ commitment, so I don’t they will even look until after he signs unless there’s someone with interest they can’t pass on.

I tend to agree with you. BK will not same a starter until late in fall camp to keep his QB room intact.

I know Kelly rolling into next season with Howard as the odds-on favorite to start would be a risk. However, it’s one that is pointed to developing Howard and Collins as “his guys” for the future.

If Kelly does this, it will tell me that he’s seen enough from Howard in practice to feel good about handing him the reigns. If we go portal shopping for a starter, not so much. We’ll see.

Not because he lacks talent but because he needs development like any other QB.

It has nothing to do with JD or Nuss. LSU can realistically get a good QB if one presents themselves in the portal.
Let's look at your point of view.

Walker has superior talent, and going into next season he will also have a year in Denbrock's system.

You think we'll find a QB in the portal that will beat him out?
Given Walker's time learning the system, you're going to need to find a guy with even more talent, because he will be at a disadvantage with the scheme and playbook. Someone THAT good is not likely to be in the portal; and if they are, they probably will take the "sure thing" program. Bama, or Clemson, etc.

If we had kept Peetz, I'd assume Nussmeier would have started ahead of Daniels, because of the same familiarity. Heck, we might not have Daniels... or Howard either. Ironically, we might have the offense so many want here: Nuss throwing to Boutte, Bech and Nabers, with maybe Kiner still around too, splitting time with Goodwin.

We don't have Peetz, because the guy above him got canned, and he brought in his own guys; and they decided Daniels was a better option for THEIR scheme, than what was left on the roster. We probably wouldn't have Peetz anyway, because the guy who was his boss was famous for quickly swapping OCs when they didn't produce right away. And that was ultimately why O failed, he had no overall vision or scheme. He just kept hitting the reset button until he found something that worked.
