I think position is overrated. We need able runners who can catch and don't fumbled in Canada's offense in my opinion.

Yes and we need them to enroll early to bulk up, learn the playbook and gain some spring ball chemistry with the OL.

You not going to be able to win consistently in the SEC without a great running game.

No, we don't, and we've done fine with RB by committee before.

at first I thought you were crazy asking that and then I thought of the time we had L.Fournette. it seemed that we depended on him way too much so when we played other really good teams all they had to do was scheme to stop him (and it worked).

still, I would like to have two very strong backs. sometimes you need a first down and sometimes you need to get into the endzone and power is what does that

The rb position has been the staple of LSU offense for as long as I have been watching. (Which is like 2006 ) We have been very lucky to have guys like Joseph Addai, Keiland Williams, Jacob Hester, Charles Scott, Steven Ridley, Spencer Ware, Kenny Hilliard, Jeremy Hill, Derius Guice, and of course the one and only Fournette.

It's not needed. But having an elite runningback does make us a better team. In order to get over the hump, we need at least a better than mediocre qb. Which besides Mett, we have not had since Matt Flynn.

Wasn't Hester a 3 star?

Bama is #1 in the nation, and they don’t have an elite back.

3 star players can be elite players but its not practical for all 3 players to reach that level, most don't.

You may have a surprise here or there but i would rather a 4 or 5 star back

An elite back turns 3yd gains into 7yd gains.

He turns first downs into TDs.

An offense that has one is much more productive... as long as you don't rely on him to BE the offense.

No back, no matter how good, elite or not, can thrive in the SEC when holes are clogged and just as big LBs are meeting you in the backfield.

So it it needed? No.

BUT... if you don't have one, you better be prepared to make up for that production somewhere else in a league where moving the chains consistently isn't easy. Hence, you better have the personnel (QB primarily) and offensive design/plan to do it. Otherwise you get some spectacular runs to go with a sub-40% 3rd down conversion rate.

Having one makes everything else work better, including the defense (ToP, resting, etc).
