Verge put it pretty bluntly earlier that he HAD to make the tournament, I mean this is pretty black and white

Not really, though I think McMahon will be gone after this season. He said reevaluate if they did not make the tournament, and has been saying some of the problems are due to losing his two best players for most of the SEC games so far.

But I think the way they are now losing probably puts an end to the Matt McMahon era right after the season ends.

This is different from everything I have heard up until now. But apparently he may get another year unfortunately.

Boosters have decided they don't want to pay another buyout + NIL + new coach because they overspent on football this year (thanks Scott). However the report that will come out will cite the administration changes that took place as reason for him getting another season. Give's boosters/BoS/Verge a year to get the money together for a massive hire (yes we all know who) because everyone knows CMM is a dead man walking whether it's this year or next year.

I really hope what I heard is wrong this time but we shall see. Will know much more in the next week I think.

Good grief. We are not a serious program. If he gets another season, I hope there are zero people in the stands and that we lose every game by 50.

We’re the biggest joke of a basketball program in Division I.

Also I don’t why but I believe this. The info you posted seems pretty specific and reads pretty insider-y.

If this turns out to be accurate, I appreciate the post but jeez it would make me throw up.

The more influential basketball boosters are mostly a different group from the influential football boosters. I believe a part of the reason MM got another year is that those boosters generally like him quite a bit. Sort of the flip side of John Brady being fired mid-season, less than 2 years post final four run. I know Brady has rebuilt his image with the faithful, but I recollect that he was somewhat abrasive with the boosters when he was coaching LSU, though I could be misremembering, and they mostly disliked him. Winning can overcome being abrasive, but you also end up with a short rope if things start to slip.

Did you hear that before last night's game. Because I have to think last night was so ugly it may change a few minds on that.

Today. But it is a complete 180 from what I have heard previously so I really hope it’s wrong.

We’re doomed.

Last night wasn’t bad enough? We’re a joke.

Brian Kelly may have screwed that. We are paying his buyout, new salaries for the football staff, and we would have to buyout McMahon and his staff. Then we would have to pay for a new coach and staff. Not sure LSU is going to be able to pay for all of that.

McMahon’s buyout is 6 million dollars. Our program is losing money relative to the revenue numbers of other programs each year in excess of what his buyout is. Most good SEC programs have net profits of 10+ million each year. Last year we profited about 2 million. This year will be worse. We can’t afford not to fire him. It’s cheaper for the bottom line to buy him out and move on

I would be embarrassed if I were McBottom dweller. I wouldn't be able to show my face on campus.

If it were me, I’d simply go to the AD & Board and try to negotiate a fair way out. It just did not work.

In what other sport at LSU would the head coach still have job after winning just 24ish percent of his/her conference games into his/her fourth season?

Another great hire by Fat Scott!

Jesus, you have to pay this fool and his staff to leave, pay a new coach and his staff to come in, plus give millions to basketball NIL. WTF I realize no one goes to the games, but it might be cheaper to let this fool play it out and give him more money for NIL.

If Reid and Thomas hadn't gotten hurt, LSU might be 500 in the SEC right now.

Admittedly I haven't followed LSU men's basketball very closely the past few years. When I read question in the post, I thought, "No way will MM be back for next season." Then I asked AI about his contract and buyout. I couldn't believe what AI told me about the contract: 7-year, $20.3 million contract running through the 2028-29 season with a 7.5 million buyout for the next 3 years. Admittedly, he was signed before NIL was big, but why in the world a 7 year contract? And 20.3 million?? Now, I'm not sure. I wouldn't like it, but I could see a scenario where he returns so LSU avoids such a big buyout.

LSU is about to overpay for a big coach and they have to. They cannot spend another 2-3 years letting a young coach develop a team.

Not happening. This is going to be another mid-major climber hire. They just need a standard contract with a reasonable buyout this time so we can move on after year two if they don’t show progress.

As badly as things are trending at the moment, this would be an outside the norm decision. Typically a new President and AD will be quick with the hook for a coach with this poor of a record who wasn’t their hire.

This should be more embarrassing for the people that continue to let McMahon "coach"

He should’ve been relieved of duties last night.

More embarrassing than using "affect" instead of "effect?"

That’s retarded and even FEWER will have season tickets and attend next yr. Who in the frick in their right mind will donate money so this loser can squander it again? It’s a damn charity at this point. I hope we lose by 50 in every single one of our remaining games so the administration has no other choice.
