Yes. LSU told him know they were not going to fire Miles.

That's what I've heard, he wanted to come back to LSU. But we had already moved on with Miles, so Saban couldn't come back here. That's how he ended up at Bama.

Yep...he surely did.....and Skip said no.....so he went to Alabama and proceeded to kick our arses in recruiting and in games. Big mistake! LSU not good at making coaching decisions. Steve S. and Nick S. both should have been here and the many national championships we could have had. Here's to hoping Lane K. turns out to be all that we hope he will be....and for a long time.

I wish they had fired Miles then championship or not. LSU was good in the early Miles years but you could tell he was a bafoon from the jump. The final years of Les were like needles to the eyes.... There ... I said it.

Les from 2005 to 2012 was easily the best 8-year stretch in the history of LSU football.

Yes, 8 years is a cherry-picked range, but still.

Yes he did. Board of supervisors voted it down. This is a fact. It was not Skip

I've heard multiple versions - one he had changed his mind before he left but Skip told him it was too late - go pack sand.

I heard another that there was a serious movement to get him back after Les's first or second year and that there were big money folks behind it, but it was eventually decided they could not do that so early after just hiring Les.

Not sure if any or all are true or not but heard both from multiple sources.

He did reach out to Richard Gill, one of our biggest boosters at the time, may he rest in peace. Saban told him that he was about to take the Alabama job unless LSU would hire him back. Mr. Gill told home we couldn’t fire Les, he had just finished with a 10 win season.

I talked to a person, supposedly in the know about this a couple weeks ago. He claims that LSU would have taken Saban back, but Alabama offered him a ton of money and he took the money. The supposed offer to let him come back and his agreeing but going to Alabama instead is why my source can’t stand Saban.

I’m not sure if I believe it.

It was a not so well kept secret that Saban always wanted to come back and at times was practically begging to in the back channels… it was really Alleva who was putting a halt to this and it was part of the reason he was let go.

Bullshite. Saban was hired as the coach at Bama 20 months before Alleva was hired at LSU. Timeline is fubar.

I maintain that if miles does not kick Perrilloux and later Mathieu off the teams he would have had multiple championships.

Perrilloux would have likely gotten us one in 2009, as our defense was much improved from the 2008 dual coordinator debacle.

Mathieu would have snuffed out yeldon’s screen. We beat bama in Death Valley then win a rematch over Florida in Atlanta and go on to win the title against a very weak Notre Dame team.

They will deny this but I can tell you that this is true. Skip didn't want him back. You have to realize that the AD at BAMA (Mal Moore) lwent to Fort Lauderdale and would not leave until Saban agreed to the job at BAMA.

This was done while MIKE SHULA was the BAMA coach and Nick was struggling with the Dolphins.

SO...the BAMA AD, went to Ft. Lauderdale and spent many days there convincing Nick to go to BAMA! He was ready to ditch his current coach in a heartbeat. Mal Moore knew what Nick could do at Bama= What he did at LSU and more...

NOW LSU:

Nick reached out through Richard Gill, head of TAF at the time and Skip told them that they were going to honor the current contract with Miles.

So you can worship Skip all you want for the baseball championships etc. But when it came to doing what was best for the football program he fricked us and fricked us hard.

I will NEVER hold Skip Bertman with any respect outside of his baseball wins, and if it meant Nick would have been here, and won 5 or 6 more championships in football, then you can have those baseball wins and do that Bama does: they don't care about baseball.

Skip fricked us good.

So Skip should have fired a guy who went 11-2 and 11-2 in his only two seasons? Are you serious? Saban wasn't within a hundred miles in the winter of 06/07 where he became 4 or so years later. LSU needed miracles in 2004 vs Oregon State and Troy State.

Unbeliveable.

What an idiotic and inaccurate post.

For the few small brains in here, there's a huge difference between, we don't have an opening and kick rocks.

It's kind of amazing that the fallout from that one player was so impactful.

Miles was doing fine at the time. Skip was also tired of the Saban job hoping rumors at the end of every season. Miles had just won 11 games and finished #3 in the nation when Saban went back to Bama. It would have been a terrible look to fire Miles at the time.

I was told at the time Saban left, that basically Bertman didnt work to keep Saban. I believe Saban was trying to stay at Miami until he could return to LSU, until Bama, after two weeks told Saban to get on the plane. Name your price. The plane isn't leaving without you on it.

Bertman did great things for LSU, but Im pissed when think about that.
