He should have quite 3 or 4 years ago.

Against Ole Miss, one play stood out that he screwed up the call on. We jumped off sides and some of the players stopped on the play. Jim assumed the play was over and went to bitching about LSU and their penalties and god knows what else. Next thing you know, he updates us that Arkansas had scored and had just kicked the extra point.

Age is the least of his broadcasting problems. The guy is flat out awful and has been for many, many years.
LSU deserves better.

Agreed. He's embarrassing.

First off...let me say I'm biased about Hawthorne.

Where I grew up in Carlyss, La, we didn't have cable or satellite until I was about 16 (1988). All Dad and I had was the radio broadcast. Hell, catching CBS from Lafayette or Beaumont required taking a pipewrench to the antenna pole and turning it.

I've grown up on Hawthorne's voice and yeah, he makes mistakes, but to me he's the voice of LSU Sports. Now that Dad's gone...it's nice to hear Hawthorne's voice on the radio, kinda reminds me of times me and Dad shared. Whether it's football, basketball, or baseball it has always been Jim Hawthorne.

Some people remember where they were when the Shuttle Challenger blew up...I remember fondly where I was during the "Earthquake" game. Digging a ditch for us to route the city water to the house...with my Dad.

Some people liked Roger Moore as James Bond. Others Pierce Brosnan. But it will always be Sean Connery for me...just like it will always be Jim H for LSU Sports.

Sorry so long.

welcome to every call he's made in every sport for the past 10 years

at least 5 times a game in basketball he will say a shot is missed then correct it by pretending it was some miracle, once in a lifetime bounce of the rim. Then if you watch the replay show, the shot was nothing but net.

Nothing beats him getting mad every football game and just screaming "WIDE OPEN, HE'S WIIIIIDE OPEN" every time the other team completes a 3 yard pass.

Too bad JH really loves LSU and gets excited about the play on the court or the field, otherwise we'd be listening to someone droning on-and-on who could care less if LSU wins.

I like his passion but he cannot paint the picture of what is happening on the field well at all. Watching the highlights with his calls in the background you really get the sense of that. He rarely describes where the ball is thrown which bothers the hell out of me. It's something along these lines:

"from the 50. Mettenberger back to pass, throwwwwwws.............CAUGHT, makes a move.....fights for yardage and DOWN to the 3 yard line is........Boone. Kadron Boone."

That sounds a lot like Eli Gold at Bama. You never can figure out where the ball is on the play.

Have any if y'all actually listened to any if the other broadcasters in the sec? Jim is great compared to most of them.

I have listened to Ole Miss' and State's play-by-play guys for entire games. While Ole Miss' guy doesn't have that vintage play-by-play voice, he is so good at translating the details of the game so that I can visualize it that I don't even notice. Honestly, his voice is somewhat annoying, but his descriptions overcome that.

Hawthorne's voice is more of that classic PBP radio guy, but he just has a hard time articulating the game sometimes. I feel like I'm always waiting on him to actually describe what just happened. The crowd is going crazy, he is excited, I'm like "What happened, Jim? What happened?" Then he says, "What a great run by Spencer." Well, OK, great run. But what happened???

Sounds like some you think it is so easy. There is a game Friday against Arkansas that will be on TV. Why don't you record yourself doing the play-by-play for the whole game, or even just a quarter or two? Then you can show everyone how wonderful you are at doing what you say anyone can do.

Screw off!

I'm not a paid play by play guy. It's not my job to pretend to announce games.

I don't care if someone loves LSU and is excited about the game. Your job is to call the game in a way that people can understand what is going on.
You also shouldn't go into negative nancy rants for many games too. Just do your job Jim. If you can't do it, retire.

Although occasionally irritating, I think Hawthorne's blunders just make him more loveable. I can't imagine anyone else's voice narrating an LSU game. In an age of slick, egotistical, self important talking heads, Hawthorne comes across as real and honest which is very refreshing.

I listened to the second half while I was driving. I didn't hear anything out of the ordinary and could easily follow the game.

This is the thread that gets started after a win because LSU fans have to bitch about something.

Same here. He was the same old Hawthorne.

When he'd miss a call, he kept saying, "We couldn't see it from here."

Don't they have a monitor!!!!
