That's interesting. Why do you say that? Volantis pitched in the equivalent of a little over 4 games. Curiel played in 55.

Yeah, but how many times did the pitcher pitch in those games, and how many times did Curiel take a pitch or field a ball?

I think Curiel's Mini slump towards the end of the regular season did him in.

Volantis has been really good all year and he's on the team that won the regular season sec title. So I can understand it.

As another poster above mentioned hopefully this gives him a chip on his shoulder and he mashes during the postseason.

This! Well said.

He faces 168 Batters

Curiel has over 200 AB and played OF.

If LSU were this years SEC regular season champs then I can just about guarantee you Curiel would’ve won it. Texas being SEC champs had some to do with their decision I’m pretty sure

This 100%. Awards are won at the end of the season

The pitcher also fielded his position. That’s not as consequential as playing left field, but it’s not nothing either.

This is not true. He has been nursing a sore arm. It is better now. He dosen't need shoulder surgery.

This was a tough year voting for freshman of the year.
You had 3 very worthy candidate, I thought Rembert from Auburn
might win too.

Crews didn't win it and was All American the next 2 years.
Glad with have Curiel, but all 3 players were deserving

Have you seen Volantis play in the 20 games he pitched?

It pretty much is. He fielded his position 6 times vs Curiel’s 76 times with zero errors. Volantis had 1 error

So here's a take no one is going to like on here

#1) Volantis was a stud this year but he was a reliever and Curiel had a bigger impact and was a better player.

#2) Curiel faded in the last month of SEC play, he hit a freshman wall and was not nearly as consistent, it's ok and he's still going to be an amazing all American level player but he did.

#3) I actually like this. Piss him off and light a fire. You feel disrespected and like you got hosed? Good. Go fricking nuts and make them all look like assholes for not voting for you.

#4) Texas was the champion and Volantis was a really good player on the team that won the SEC title. That does carry some weight. Fair or not- it does.

Curiel finished a pretty clear third , in my opinion. Not sure why the conversation has been centered around Volantis and Curiel.

Curiel was deserving of the award but Volantis was also deserving of the award. Its really not that shocking that Volantis won it. Don't prop up Curiel by minimizing what Volantis did. Both Players were excellent in their first year and deserving of the award and its unfortunate that only one won it but taking off the LSU glasses and Volantis was clearly a player that earned the award.

Both players have a bright future in the SEC and beyond. Looking forward to seeing how Curiel continues to improve and develop as a hitter and defender.

Crews was an AA his freshman year too (2nd team for D1 and PG, 3rd Team for NCBWA and ABCA). He also won National Freshman of the Year from Perfect Game

People get way too hung up on these accolades. There are a lot of good players that are many times equally deserving of the same thing. Someone has to be chosen, and it doesn't mean the guy who wasn't was robbed
