Depth... a thing of the past with the portal?

As discussed last night (and today), LSU's 1st team defense is a monster. They have suffocated their opponents in the first 2 games. The only measurable success for those teams has only come against the back-ups.
Which begs the question: is quality depth a thing of the past? Any player worth a damn that has a player ahead of them on the depth chart no longer need to wait for graduation or the draft, they can just relocate.
Sure, we have benefited from that as well, but it seems we will be severely top heavy for the foreseeable future.

Good point. Haven’t thought of it from that angle.

Yes.
Saban’s model of stacking talent to wait and learn behind talent is over.

Yep. No one wants to ride the pine if they don’t have to. They’ll just play at a lesser school. College football is broken and there is no reasonable way to fix it at this point

Maybe, maybe not. We have a lot of young talent that stayed, and just as much that we brought in with next year in mind. Devin Harper as a transfer and Corey Barber and Rich Anderson as recruits for example

1 free transfer would fix the portal, but the NCAA and conference don’t have the stones to put that into place and enforce it.

I know this is a common talking point, but in the past… our 2’s could come in and look like the ‘85 Bears?
I don’t recall that or having the 2’s have multiple 5 stars on the DL. In the early 2000’s for example, a freshman like Lamar Brown would definitely be expected to start or essentially platoon as starter.
In those days, if two OL were out, you would be playing someone who likely had barely played a snap.
I think, at least with this years team, that is overblown other than Corner.

Yes. It’s unintended consequence of NIL and portal. Exactly why Nick got out. He could no longer stack 5 stars at every position. If the back up is that good he will get paid and go elsewhere. Not apples to apples but like when uber and Lyft came along dui’s dropped like a rock nationwide.

Kiffin spoke to this over the summer. It’s why you still have to bring in the High School kids.
Portal to fill voids.
HS to provide depth.

Depth costs money. Hence while this will be 2 years in a row that the SEC has a regular season winning record vs B1g but loses in post season.
This is a major issue and this is why Sankey has to go. More interested in sueing member schools than evening the playing field

Limiting transfers without sitting a year significantly repairs a lot of this. You get 1. Doesn’t matter if coach leaves or anything else. You get 1.
Similar to 5/5. Cleaner to remove the nuance.

great point
I think you are generally right, although I will say let Lane and his staff get 1-2 more years to fill out the depth chart and you will probably see much better 2's and 3's
This year they had to revamp everything all at once

No. As evidence by LSU having about 20 receivers, quality backups at every DL position and at every DB position before we lost Anding. Davon Keys is mostly sitting the bench this year. Plus we have excellent depth at QB.
In 1982 LSU played Nebraska in a Bowl game. Our starting DL was perhaps the best in LSU history: Leonard Marshal, Ramsey Dardar, and Bill Elko. Behind them we had one 245 pound nose guard, Greg Bowser.
That team had some freshmen who would turn out to be good players, but they were not ready for prime time yet. We kicked nebraska’s arse for three quarters then ran out of steam and lost.

That would mean that staying healthy is more crucial than ever.
You could have a good but not great healthy team come out on top at the end of the year.
This has always been a factor but now it looks like an exponential factor.

It’s not like depth means all the 2s come in and play. One guy or two would still be playing with 9 other elite players.
