He’s not good enough defensively to play regularly if he keeps at this pace

Unrelated to hitting but someone on the team has a .444 fielding %.

As fans, we see only the games and think we know everything base on a small sample size. I don't mean that towards you, HCB, I am referring to all of us. Mainieri who actually sees these guys practice has a little more info to go on. I am assuming Hellmers was hitting well in practice and showed a decent glove. Safford one of the early leaders for the job must have fell off a little bit. Thompson had a little accuracy issue with throws from third and not a great bat. It was a desperate move by Mainieri and having hindsight now not a good one. To expect this guy to come in and be a SEC level 3B without even much practice at the position, well..... It was actually unfair to Hellmers. This guy is a really good baseball player and he doesn't deserve the bashing, that should be on Mainieri.

I will get into the freshman pitchers on a different thread, once we have seen them all. Still waiting to see Rice and Murray.

I like to keep things fun, but if we’re being honest paul found out hellmers played 3rd base in high school during a fall practice. Not a great look

I wouldnt expect him to play vs LHP.

Problem is all of the alternatives seem to be lefties, albeit not as baffled by the LHP as Drost.

Dugas and bianco will likely both be in the lineup for lefties

This is one of the criticisms Paul actually deserves. If it's my team, I'm going to be really interested in my recruits. I'm sure football coaches are busy but they are constantly evaluating and communicating with recruits. Paul seems to have the attitude of that's not his job. I'm not a Paul basher and Cain is doing fantastic but I wouldn't mind a coach that was more involved in recruiting.

Milazzo looks lost. Need to see more of Wyteh. 3 hits in 7 ABS with 2 doubles.

I agree but sometimes you trade off a bat for defense. Miazzo has a good glove and is good at blocking pitches in the dirt in addition to throwing out base stealers.

But do you want them in CF?

NO. I expect bianco will get some run at 2B with doughty out for what sounds like an extended amount of time

One or 2 lefties will be ok. Last few years have been worse, they were really pigeonholed with a ton of lefty bats & no other options. They are much more right handed dominant this season

Also have the option of dhing wyeth, outting beloso in left and maybe dugas in cf. obviously not a great defensive lineup. But its something.

Of course hampton in cf vs lefties also works. Tons of options

To be fair, it’s literally the best spin move since Michael Jackson thriller.

I'm not sure if you are joking but sadly it's not being used because of covid.

He only saw him practice at 3B 4 times between last summer and opening day all of them the week before the first game because Hellmers also had covid. It’s disingenuous to say that PM saw something, anything, that would put Hellmers above guys who have been there all summer, fall, and spring. He admitted it was an experiment and he was just going with his gut. And he admitted it was a terrible move. It’s okay to be critical of that call.
