It is a sticking point with his father from previous mentions of it. The red-shirt only matters if you plan on being at LSU for 4 seasons or if you want to keep your transfer options open with all or most of your eligibility left.

Agree 100%. You want an Alpha at QB. Alpha's don't get an opportunity like this and say..."nah...I think I will sit this one out".

I have no problem with LSU working the RS angle for him, but if I'm the head coach and a QB on my roster doesn't want to step up in this situation...no bueno.

heard Hester say on the radio they can ask the NCAA for a waiver that would allow him to retain his redshirt

I think the NCAA should just allow the bowl to not count against red shirt eligibility.

This! One way or the other Nuss will not be playing at LSU as a redshirt senior

That’s not fair to the kid. It’s really easy to tell someone else what to do with an entire year of eligibility. This game means absolutely nothing. He’s not selfish for not wanting to burn it just for this/

Hell. He can still go through all the practices and not play.

If I'm Nuss, I'm not worrying about a redshirt. Here is a great opportunity to start a bowl game, play well and put something good on tape besides the bad ending to the Arky game. It's a chance for him to show what he can do with a month of prep and might be the best thing he can do with a 5-star QB coming in and another likely transfer QB.

If I’m in his shoes, and I want to be the starting qb for 2022, I take this chance to be the starter and run with it. It’s you chance to show the new coach what you can do.

If I’m Brian Kelly and I’m watching a quarterback refuse to lead his team into a bowl game, he might as well be telling me, “I really don’t want to be a starter here.”

Seems like a long shot but it's a great way to start the conversation on it.

Or at minimum he is considering the possibility of leaving.

If he is firm on staying at LSU then the bowl game presents the first opportunity to make an impression on the new coaching staff in advance of what will almost assuredly be an open QB competition. Worst case scenario is he puts film out there for other schools to see (similar to NFL preseason games). Him CHOOSING to not play, despite a desperate need for him to do so, is essentially him saying "I'm going to do what is best for me" and not really caring that it hurts his teammate's chance for success. And the fact that LSU is "working through things" to essentially get a waiver re: the redshirt rules means he's already told them that he is not going to play unless he gets the waiver.

I'll say it 100X. College football has arguably the best regular season and the WORST postseason of any sport. It is becoming more and more clear for many players that if he isn't on a team in the playoffs he doesn't really care about the bowl game. You basically follow up the regular season with several backups and walkon's playing in what amounts to exhibition games about which the players mostly don't give a damn.

When you expect to get beat out by an unyet-signed incoming high school kid, that extra year at the back end of your college career is huge.

According to MaxPreps Kirklin threw for 7500 yards and 97 TD in high school.

ODowd and/or Faulk could get a couple of series too.

Makes no sense. Nuss was ready to burn the redshirt only 2 games ago but now doesn’t want to play a whole bowl game with both other qbs in the portal. The starting job is his for the taking and he’s worried about a redshirt year now?

Do you think Myles Brennan is happy that he red shirted a year?

Yeah it's not important until it is.

I didn't originally say he couldn't throw, I said let him throw it only about 15 times or so...because of lack of practice/timing with the WRs and to kinda simplify it for him more than lack of arm talent

I really don't get this. He already has been practicing with the team since last Spring. If he doesn't think he is ready now, then why should we think he would be ready by next fall?

Most QB's would burn their red shirt on playing a bowl game alone. You don't snub your nose at golden opportunities.

If I had to guess, their pitch is something like PTO hours at work. If you take an hour off that it's just an hour less of your total PTO rather than having to take an entire PTO day over really only an hour.

Pretty sure the NCAA currently treats stepping on the field for one play as, that counts towards your redshirt no differently than playing the entire game. I just don't really agree with that especially for special circumstances and bowl games.

It's not like Nuss started and played 4 full games this season.

How is this possible? He can play in X number of games and keep the redshirt. If the bowl puts him over that, he loses it.

It’s not complicated.

People get waivers for all sorts of things that are pretty clear cut these days.

See Kristian Fulton.

Yeah. If has as good as people think, okay the bowl and lose the redshirt. You get the practice and game reps going into next year. And if he’s really good, he starts as a sophomore and jr then leaves for the nfl.

Unless there is transfer coming in who will definitely start, don’t see what anyone loses by Nuss burning the redshirt.

Maybe Nuss and his family want it. We really can't afford to piss him off at the moment. Sure, he view it as a chance to get bowl experience and show he's a team player. On the other hand, he may view it as losing an entire future season on a meaningless bowl while playing for a coaching staff that is mostly going to be fired the day after that game.

I can’t help but wonder if he and his family are hedging on staying at LSU if Howard storms in and wins the job. Maybe preserving his freshman year gives them more flexibility if he doesn’t stay?

This occurred to me because of the previous news of his father’s involvement in the redshirt discussion.
