Had he started to slide, then it would have been targeting.
He didn’t really have the opportunity to because he just spun away from the other defenders.
I get he didn’t just catch the ball, but how is it any different? The whole idea behind that is that you’re orientated to the field and can protect yourself. JD couldn’t hear.
By rule it’s not, but there are indeed elements of targeting.

frick no. It’s basically the same thing that Devin White did in 2018 that were all so pissed off about.

By this logic, every player who breaks a tackle is now defenseless for a second or two.
Daniels was fighting for extra yards and got lit up because of it.
Don’t be dumb.

Not targeting because he wasn’t a defenseless player
This isn’t a part of the rule. I know this because I have seen targeting on run plays where the RB has been hit while running

The rule of defenseless versus not is not confusing.
Daniels made himself a ball carrier, pretty much if you dont lower your head you are ok. That Ole Miss player had his head up in your own picture.

Targeting is such a BS penalty. I never complain when it’s not called.

He launched UP and hit him in the head/neck area.
Well JD also launched himself up in the air. Was he targeting too?

quote:Generally only if the crown of the helmet is used .Rarely you will see the defender launch upward and make a hell of a hit up high, but that is not really the spirit of the rule. Defenseless is more to protect the offensive player, when it involves an established ball carrier it is as much to protect the defender
I know this because I have seen targeting on run plays where the RB has been hit while running
quote:It is most definitely part of the rule.
This isn’t a part of the rule
Defenseless v non defenseless.
quote:
A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass
A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier
A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return
A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect himself or has not clearly become a ball carrier
A player on the ground
A player obviously out of the play
A player who receives a blind-side block
A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward progress has been stopped
A quarterback any time after a change of possession a ball carrier who has obviously given himself up and is sliding feet first"

yes it is

I know this because I've read the actual rule.
NCAA rulebook
quote:
ARTICLE 3 No player shall target and make forcible contact against an opponent with the crown of their helmet
quote:
Targeting and Making Forcible Contact to Head
or Neck Area of a Defenseless Player
ARTICLE 4 No player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent
quote:
Examples of defenseless players include but are not limited to:
• A player in the act of or just after throwing a pass This includes an offensive player in a passing posture with focus downfield
• A receiver attempting to catch a forward pass or in position to receive a backward pass, or one who has completed a catch and has not had time to protect themselves or has not clearly become a ball carrier
• A kicker in the act of or just after kicking a ball, or during the kick or the return
• A kick returner attempting to catch or recover a kick, or one who has completed a catch or recovery and has not had time to protect themselves or has not clearly become a ball carrier
FR-94 RUlE 9 / CondUCt oF PlayERs and othERs
• A player on the ground
• A player obviously out of the play
• A player who receives a blind-side block
• A ball carrier already in the grasp of an opponent and whose forward
progress has been stopped
• A quarterback any time after a change of possession
• A ball carrier who has obviously given themselves up and is sliding feet-
first
leading with crown will get you a targeting call no matter what.
if not leading with crown, then players has to be defenseless.
and these are the examples given in the official NCAA rulebook of defenseless players.
that hit was not targeting by definition.

I hate targeting more than any rule in all of sports. That being said, I wanted the targeting call on that play.

Nope. Clean hit that should’ve never even happened.
Reminder that LSU was driving with little resistance until Emery ran the wrong way on 1st and 10.
1st and 10 on Ole Miss 27.
Emery ran the wrong direction. 2 yard run for Daniels.
Can't get the play call in. Timeout.
Thomas slips on a comeback route. Incomplete
Nobody open. Scramble. Fumble.
Side note: What is Mason Taylor doing on that play? Diggs turns and makes a block. Taylor watches 3 Ole Miss defenders run by him.

Yep saw live and called it out immediately in the game thread. RG3 and company didnt even mentioned with the hindsight of replay. Major failure all around
Only thing i can figure is since he was running he wasnt a defenseless player? Still was force contact (with launch) to the head or neck area which IMO shoulda been targeting

I thought so when I saw it at live game speed
But I’m replay he didn’t lower his head and hit JD more in the chest.
It was a call that if made in the field likely would have been overturned as not targeting.
Brutal hit though. Wish our defense hit like that

No because It wasn’t targeting. It wasn’t even close.

Nope. He was running forward, there was a guy holding his jersey that he pulled away from but he was looking right at the guy who popped him for at least a step.

That makes no sense. He was a running back at that point. Not even close to defenseless. He had time to slide, if he does that, then he gets the penalty.
