Knight may have been a jerk but he was a much better coach than Brown

Yer not jes' woofin'. Can't believe the LSU fan base put up with Brown (and McClendon) as long as they did, with so little to show for it.

I wonder if Dale is going to make the funeral?

Dale and Knight patched up their differences years ago and became friends. He may very well attend the funeral.

But it should be pointed out Dale went to the four corners in the three games we won earlier in that tourney against Ga tech, Temple and DePaul as well.

That is true - it worked out in those games but I never found it to be a very good strategy, especially being at that time there was a shot clock albeit a 45 second clock.

I always found it odd that you outplay a team all night, get a lead and then quit doing what you were doing to get the lead. Never made sense to me.

But Indiana could not find a good matchup for Nikita and Nikita was hot that night. As the SI article on the game stated, LSU's Nikita Wilson was unstoppable, until LSU stopped getting him the ball.

I can't speak for the other games they won in regard to the 4-corners and whether it was necessary or effective, but the decision for this Indiana game, IMHO it was an egregious error.

I remember the game but cannot remember the refs being bad; but am sure they were. All I remember is that Brown played at the end not to lose and then lost.

Again, he played the same way the three games before that. He also, unfortunately and unfairly, had to deal with foul trouble to Woodside and Brown that made it reasonable to try and shorten the game. The entire game (not part of it) they were setting moving screens and literally holding Woodside and Brown when they were trying to stick with Alford; it was really hard to believe. You could see the entire LSU coaching staff screaming and begging the refs to call it. Of course when they got near Alford it was a foul every damn time; hence Wood and Ollie being in foul trouble. Actually had an Indiana fan walk up to me after the game was over and tell me LSU got screwed by the officials. It was awful.

4 SEC regular season titles and a couple of final fours. That's why we put up with him. His teams played pretty good ball and he went on a decade long run making it to the tourney.

Probably outstayed his welcome but I'd take that now.

And Brown may have been a bigger shitbag than Knight. He was just more polished.

As an LSU student and then season ticket holder I got to see up close and personal Ethan Martin, deWayne Scales, Rudy Macklin, Greg Cook, Jerry Reynolds, Derrick Taylor, John Williams, Nikita Wilson, Chris Jackson, Stanley Roberts and Shaq (among others) play for my Tigers. Put up with him?? I’m grateful we had him. What an utterly asinine comment.

And yes I know you didn’t make the comment denvertiger.

How was Knight not T'd up in 1987 Elite 8?

He was T'd up. He got a technical foul for running on the court and arguing a 3-second call going into a timeout.

He didn't get a second tech for breaking the phone during the same timeout, and he absolutely should have (causing him to be ejected). However, the crowd was 10-1 Indiana fans and the refs were intimidated.

I know: I was there in the band. Only game I've walked out of convinced LSU had gotten jobbed by the refs (and not only because of him not getting thrown out.)

GEAUX TIGERS!

If it's the game I remember, the refs refused to give Knight a technical foul late in the game, when it would have basically iced it for us.

And it wasn't on a questionable act- Knight didn't like a call, went to the scorers table, and slammed the phone on it so hard that phone broke.

Now, imagine ANY coach you can think of. Even Saban- if he goes and rages at the refs late in a game, and then throws the 1st Down chain, does he not get a penalty?

I may be mistaken but I think the uncalled tech was in the first half when he banged the phone, but it should have been called and would have meant his ejection because he was given a tech earlier in the game.

This is just not even close to the truth. Dale & Vonnie Brown are two of the nicest and helpful people in the world. I’m guessing you don’t know him or his wife in person. They have helped & inspired thousands of people in the world over the last 40-50 years. You have no right to call him a shitbag, because he just isn’t. Comparing his character to Bobby Knight is ridiculous and just not true.

Knight was a crude, rude bully who wouldn't have lasted in today's landscape. It's a tired and trite notion to hear people say, "I would have wanted my kid to play for him."

No, you wouldn't. Your kid would have wanted to quit on Day Two.

Here's a true story:
My friend sees Knight in a Denny's or something during a coaching convention. Knight has some fellow D1 head coaches sitting with him, one of whom knows my friend.
My friend, accompanied by his wife, goes up to the table to say hello to the coach they know. The coach, trying to be polite, introduces my friend (and his wife) to Knight, saying that he's known my friend from way back.

Knight looks over at my friend and his wife...and does the bored jerk off motion with his right fist.

That's what kind of crude a-hole he was.

Other than that, yeah, rest in peace, I guess.

Well, considering Bobby Knight just now beat Dale Brown to death…
