A question for y’all. Why would Cade agree to sign for 800k under slot? Do team make it up another way? Did he think that no one would take him in next few picks so he wouldn’t have gotten that anyway?

MLB draft is so random and chaotic when it comes to where players are picked vs their true value. Most of the time it comes down to a combination of 1) your talent, 2) your leverage, 3) your signability.

1. Is self explanatory.

2. Players who are sophomores, juniors, or HS seniors have the most leverage assuming they play for a prestigious college program or have a commitment to a big time college.

3. Signability is what can make or break where a player is chosen. That pitcher who went 2 to the Angels was taken so the Angels could get a great player but pay him under slot and go offer some players down the road that would of "requested" a larger bonus than what teams had left in their bonus pool.

If you were called at pick 3 and you were offered 8.8 million to sign would you say no?

If you did say no would you then risk potentially dropping to say the 6-8 pick where your bonus is now maybe 2 million less?

There's no real perfect way to explain why it is the way it is.

Edit: The Angels saved 2.56 million from the #2 pick that they had enough to their HS selection in rounds 12 (Vanderbilt commit) and make a run at their HS selection in round 13 who is Texas signee.

2 reasons

1. It was the team he wanted to draft him out of the top group potentially and its still 9 million bucks

and/or

2. It was the best offer he was getting from the Top 5 teams or so

He signed for more than the top 2 picks did. In the end the teams dont have to give you slot value, maybe the others were offering less than $8.8M to him. Its pretty clear the top teams in the draft wanted to save at least something to pay other guys down the line way over slot to get more great players. The MLB draft is not checkers, its a lot of chess.

The grand majority of 1st rounders that have signed have done so for under slot value this year. Like 6 out of 2 dozen almost have signed for slot or above

And sign for $20k or less

Im not taking the time to go look it up but someone else can go look at the first 7 rounds and see how many seniors were drafted and see what they ended up signing for. If less than 150K then he shouldnt come back. If they signed for 200K or more then he should come back.

Its simple, dont overthink it

Pirates second round pick Angel Cervantes says that he will not sign with them and is honoring commitment to UCLA. They still have saved roughly 550k so far in signings so they have some money to throw to the unsigned draft picks like Bear.

This is purely my opinion and speculation, but *Kade could have had different amounts for different teams. The Mariners are currently 53-47 and 2nd place in their division. The next four picks are were Rockies (24-76), Cardinals (52-49), Pirates (40-61), Marlins (46-53). It's possible that he was willing to take less with the Mariners in order to not get drafted by one of those other teams.

So you think he took less money to sign with a better team where it might be more difficult to be promoted to a major league roster quicker?

Did he just not like college? I can’t imagine going for that much with another year available in college. I know leverage but for 2.5k it would be worth it just for the fun. Something can’t be right.
and how can a slot value only be $188? You get drafted and all they pay you in a signing bonus is a Ruth Chris dinner?

ETA maybe OP messed up and meant 188.6k but it’s hard to tell when your signing bonus is only $2,500

Kade Woods $2.5 k ($188.6 slot value)

Apparently he did really well at the MLB combines and he clearly wasn't going to get playing time at LSU. He already entered the portal so wasn't coming back anyway. At least 3 draft picks for the Braves signed for a total of $12,500 (2 at 2,500 and 1 at 7,500). I wish him the best of luck. He never got a chance at LSU

I don't know if it was mentioned in here, but the Rangers drafted Paxton Kling (7th round) and have signed him.
