After being picked #5, it would be truly shocking if he didn't go pro

Guys picked in first two rounds have already agreed to sign and most, if not all, have agreed on a number

Oh well even the great ones get one wrong every now and then.

Sucks for Curiel he had all the leverage he needed and caved to an organization who is as cheap as they come.

That's not really the way it works. Teams have signing discussions before drafting a player and have an agreement in place. Curiel was rated below the 5th prospect just about everywhere.

He can either demand full slot and get drafted outside the top ten (which pays 6Mish). Or he can agree to below slot value and go number 5 (and get paid 6Mish). He didn't cave.

Yes, the Pirates are a cheap organization but this is not an example of it. They overpaid the next four picks by a combined 2.2M. Almost identical to the savings on Curiel. It's a pretty common strategy in the draft every year.

He didn’t cave. He was still picked higher and received more than he otherwise would have had he been picked closer to where he was projected.

A lot of 1st round picks signed considerably below slot value. The #6 overall from Louisville signed 2 million under slot as well. This isn’t the Pirates being cheap. They’re just allocating their pool money elsewhere in the draft

Here is a link to what 1st round guys signed for
