I saw in a practice report that the option was practiced today for a while with Russel Shepard obviously looking the best of all quarterbacks.

From the reporter,

"It was amazing to see the freshmen Michael Ford and Drayton Calhoun running the option with Shepard. It looks like that could be a staple in the LSU offense for the next three years."

Thoughts...

wow, i've heard all the talk about the "spread option" but are you/they referring to a traditional wishbone type "option"?

Shotgun w/ 2 RB, 1 TE, 2 WR

Shepard at QB, Ford as the inside RB option, Calhoun as the pitch man option

Triple option

we are a multiple formation offense and the option is one of those we run. we've been doing it. it's hard to defend against LSU because we do it all, including the "spread" with 5 receivers (one a TE or RB), standard 2 or 3 WR sets, the power I, etc, etc. with the wide variety of QB's we have ( drop back pro style, running QB's ), different styles of RB's and an OL that blocks real well for both, we are only limited by our quality of execution. as an old guy watching the 3 yd's and a cloud of dust style of chollie mac, our current offense is pure joy to watch. yes, i think the option will be with us a while but only as one of our formations. we don't want to get "locked in" like Ga. Tech.

remember the pistol formation. Shep or JJ could run the option out of that formation. Flynn did it several times.

The pistol is going to destroy teams this year.

Yes, especially with RS running it. Don't tell SFP, though. He might go into shock.

Option died with Nebraska after the Scott Frost era. Maybe Crouch era?

why?

that's the only way he lines up at QB in a real QB role

i'm just waiting to see us run this offense a good bit before i think it becomes a staple. we've run it here or there, but it's never been close to our main offense. and we completely abandon it for some games

Paul Johnson didn't get that memo.

I would love to see Shep and Trindon run a few option plays this year.

I think the option will become more prevalent with Shep in at QB. Les has spoke fondly of the option in the past, but I still see us trying to bring a balanced offensive attack no matter who the personnel is.

That would be very neat seeing Shepard & Company running the option. Could have potential.

True and false to some extent. Although Georgia Tech had a good team this past year, they have "maxed out" on terms of potential. That is the best they'll ever do, which isn't bad for Georgia Tech.

Spread Option? Maybe. I wouldn't run it if i had a Freshman or Sophomore at QB.

Pistol? Yes. Defiantly. It can be as simple as a read and give up the middle or a speed option.

Flexbone? as much as I love it, no way.

The only thing I hate about the option is seeing our QB get banged up!!!

when LSU runs the option it will be devastating, with jj. and R.S will give us at least 4 more positions a game... That is if we don't score.. Herb Tyler was the man in the 90's.J.J. will surprise all this season
