i'm fairly certain jack clark managed to get cal a varsity-sport designation
several programs about the nation have endowments in the hundreds of thousands of dollars

I think you're right, and also I think Penn State just achieved varsity status for its men's rugby team.

Rugby is one of UC's thirteen varsity sports for men... women's varsity sports at berkeley total fourteen

Cal's program is called a varsity sport by the university...but not an NCAA varsity sport.
I guess this is just semantics. The difference is they don't get scholarships but do get access to the training room and facilities.
All "scholarships" at Cal are done through their alumni program.

Good luck to LSU's rugby program. I'm pulling for SDSU though. I played for OARFC for a couple of years in the 90's. Go Aztecs, RUCK OVER!

Grats to the rugby Tigers!

The big problem is the lack of funding. Now that LSU has traveled to Greeley, Colorado and won, they have to find the money to get to Berkeley. And if they are fortunate enough to win two games, they have to find a way to get to Stanford for the final 4.
Bus, just tell them to sell blood and semen. That should cover at least 1 of those trips.

dude... i think you're fudging...
so the support for the program is in the form of an alumni endowment...
I would think the rugby program at Cal does fall under NCAA Title IX... and therefore is a varsity sport.
No semantics about it...

Cal's rugby team is not affiliated with the athletic department in the same way the basketball and football teams are. Most of the sports associated with the university are NCAA varsity sports; rugby is just a varsity sport. The athletic department gives the rugby team many of the same amenities NCAA sports get (such as medical attention and academic support), but Clark's team isn't allotted as much funding.

I have a friend who played for Cal. Played softball with him, dude could take a softball to the face and not even flinch. I've been to matches and that crap is brutal.

SDTiger - we both know they don't get the funding of the basketball and football programs...
neither does women's soccer or women's water polo...
You and I both know the 'support' CalBear Rugby gets from the university far outclasses LSU RFC...
the quote doesn't convince me it isn't title ix - check out the CalBear Athletic website... rugby is there with the other 27 varsity programs

Not arguing that you don't get a varsity letter if you play for the first side.
Just saying it isn't an NCAA varsity sport.
Here is the sub-headline of the article I linked above

i do wonder if it qualifies as title ix... Cal Rugby has unbelievable funding
NCAA-sanctioning might have implications in addition to title ix...
regardless the LSU RFC has achieved greatness with their #3 seed and winning the west

Na...South African professor who started the club in 1970 did. It is a Zulu word meaning "field/place of slaughter".
