This LSU team isn't that good.

You played the B team.
not so much big boy. And the refs handed LSU the freaking game. And LSU players wouldn't admit it...that's why no post game hand shakes. I still want to punch some of those figs

My cousin plays on the LSU rugby team and I was at the game against SLU. Horrible officiating. Refs stole that match from SLU IMO

rugby must be associated with stealing, IMO

LSU now ranked #5 in the country.
New D1 Rugby Top 25
Also, the second game of the series between BYU and Utah is scheduled to be aired on Tuesday, April 7, at 8pm (Central) on ESPNU.
You can watch to see BYU who, like Cal, is ridiculously good at rugby. And you can scout Utah, LSU's next opponent.

I watched the Cal/British Columbia match last night and came away with three observations.
1. Cal really supports rugby.
2. Its a rough game.
3. I don't understand anything about this sport.

If you want to learn more about the game, check out some of the material I've assembled here. The Rugby 101 video is a good start.
If not, no worries. I didn't catch last night's game, but I plan on checking out the BYU-Utah game tonight.

Congrats to LSU rugby. When I played at Vandy it was always a battle between us and I still have a lot of friends from those LSU squads in the 80's.
To the guy who posted that college teams routinely defeat the best men's teams in the country. Dude, I played for Santa Monica and we our B side slaughtered every college team we faced. Our A side never even faced a college team because of the risk of injury. No way a college team (even Berkeley) comes close to deafeating an OMBAC, Belmont Shore, NYAC, or Santa Monica A side. The difference between college and elite (i.e. Super League or Division One) men's rugby is atronomical.

Maybe true 10 years ago but not now. THIS YEAR's results Cal defeated NYAC (reigning Super League Champs) and last year I watched the game in San Diego when Cal dismantled OMBAC. They set up a yearly challenge match between the collegiate champion and the Super League champion. College teams are 3 and 1 (Cal lost the first year and has won 3 straight). Also, both BYU and Colorado State (the team LSU beat Sunday morning) beat the Denver Barbos within the last month.
The BEST rugby being played in the country right now is at the Collegiate level.

Good luck and congrats to the rugby team

calitiger - my thought is Cal-Berkeley would be highly competitive with any of the super league teams AND for years clark has had that team as talented and as strong as any mens side in the nation.
it is true many college sides are undermanned when matching up against a strong mens side - the key word is 'many'
and SLU fan... if LSU RFC wasn't 'that good' the west tournament would have settled that... officiating might have been in the shitter for the match and SLU perhaps should have won - this wouldn't mean LSU isn't that good.

I can't believe that NYAC and OMBAC fielded their full A sides for those matches. Look, I have great respect for Berkeley's program (I played with several alums) but those two clubs comprise the elite of men's rugby in this country. If they were at full strength and Cal defeated them, then that would be quite an accomplishment. However, my argument was with the assertion that college teams "routinely" defeat the top men's clubs. Cal is hardly indicative of a typical college rugby team. Good luck to the Tigahs and RUCK ON!!!

I know OMBAC fielded their A side last year. You have to understand that when I say the best rugby played in the USis college rugby. This is because our best club level players now play professionally overseas. The entire US Eagle pool (with only 1 or 2 exceptions) now play internationally. That is good for the US side but is making the Super League less impressive.

agreed - the best collegiate teams - the top twenty or so - are now playing very high level rugby
premiere collegiate sides - the top five or so - will be very competitive with the highest level super league clubs
coaching - head coach and a number of devoted position coaches - has been critical to recent success at LSU... high school rugby across Louisiana has developed talent... and the team itself at LSU has recruited and committed themselves.
a Texas Rugby Union side against the likes of the Utahs, BYUs, Air Force Academy - the achievement of this XV cannot be overstated

That is a huge point...coaching. The best and longest tenured coaches are at the college level. Also, college teams practice 4-5 times per week, have an off season work out program, etc while the club teams do their own thing in the off season and practice two nights per week.
Posted on 4/7/09 at 12:35 pm to SDTiger15
Good points. I have been away from the college game for a while. Obviously, things have changed a bit. However, at Santa Monica we had a very structured off-season program and our practice sessions were much more brutal than any I had experienced on the college level. Also, I think that the diaspora of American players is offset at the club level by the influx of foreigners. I would say that over half of our starting XV were foreign. Both of our Eagles were foreign-born (one from Sout Africa and the other from Australia).
