Even though the BCS rankings are no longer with us, I still enjoy checking in on my favorite ranking method, the Colley Matrix, which is based purely on a team's record and who they've beaten. Some interesting results this week: LINK / .

Look at all those schools with zero top 25 wins.

So Louisiana Tech would be a top 25 team? Damn

The BCS ranking system was okay, I'd rather it over the playoff committee.

Colley was the best of the rankings and had the best site.

Loved the BCS rankings because they gave the G5 teams a shot at a good bowl.

Now the playoff committee just sticks with the big name teams in the top 25 as best they can.

Colley also has Ole Miss at 46, which is nuts.

IIRC, the committee has chosen the same 4 as the BCS would have like 14 out of 16 times.

I think rankings need to go deeper than that.

Efficiency metrics, offense and defense metrics vs. level of opponent offense and defense, etc.

no. The BCS rankings were 2/3 human polls, which are a joke. 1/3 was computer rankings, but the algorithm is changed every year.

I'd rather a committee of serious people doing serious analysis (much like the March Madness selection committee, which most people love). The human polls are nothing like that at all.

All you have to do is look at the 2017 final rankings to know what a joke Colley is. UCF #1???? Really??? With that strength of schedule????

In 2003, the BCS was 1/3 computer, 1/3 SOS, 1/3 polls. When media darling USC didn't get in, they changed it.

Should have kept the BCS , just let it pick 4 instead of 2. Never understood the need for a committee.

It definitely produces surprising results sometimes, particularly early in the season. But it's not trying to be predictive -- it's only measuring what teams have actually accomplished on the field (with no margin of victory component) in terms of wins/losses, their opponents wins/losses, the wins/losses of their opponents' opponents, etc. I'd argue that the fact that it gives surprising results sometimes is a strength because it can point out cases where "the eye test" isn't sufficient.

Regarding the UCF ranking of #1 from last year, that qualifies as a surprising result and it's not one I agree with. But it isn't crazy -- losing games matters. UCF was the only team that didn't lose a game, and they beat some quality opponents.

That's generally the MO of college football. Whichever option makes the least sense, go with that one, and let the fans argue about it.

The fricking bonkers part is that lsu accounts for 5 of those 8 losses.
