A lot if the coach is detail oriented. The little things that most people overlook is what makes a player better along with a great work ethic.

I think coaching up individual players is only one facet of what separates the great coaches. I more of it has to do with conveying the overall vision of a program, coaching discipline, and simplifying schemes to help all the players realize the big picture as a unit. That, and hiring great position coaches to help polish the players' skills to achieve that big picture.

The laugher is that the people on this forum think that the head coach spends the majority of his time “coaching kids up”. He may spend time with a specific group, (O with DT’s), but the majority of the improvements are brought on by the position coach.
O’s job is to motivate, recruit, hire, and make big picture decisions.

I would think position coaches have a better effect on individual improvements than head coaches.
e.g. Dave Aranda is more linebacker concentrated. Best in the country, imo. So a top linebacker missing out on Aranda is silly to me {coughs} Dylan Moses {coughs}

A lot of it is getting the players to play as a team/together/ to know their responsibilities. Technique is taught and matters but if they don't play as a cohesive unit all the great players will not make as big a difference.
Saban himself said this about RB's and WR's:
"a quote from Nick Saban about running backs and wide receivers. “No coach teaches you how to make a guy miss,” Saban said. “No coach teaches you how to explode through a hole and outrun anybody. No coach really teaches you how to run past the corner because you're faster than they are. Technically, there's probably less that (players at) those positions have to learn.”"

Transformational. I'd think it's analogous to turning PVC pipe, scrap metal, junkyard plastic, strontium, and bungees into a fully functioning Iron Man armor. Recruiting gives you the boy-putty that coaching sculpts into sturdy man-ashtrays.

A good bit. I presume you mean position coaches as well. But a good HC will have a cohesive program, everyone will understand the vision, his position coaches will be good at technique, and strength and conditioning and nutrition will make stronger and quicker players. There is a reason the Sabans of this world are great, and it is not just recruiting. You have to be able to take a great HS player and elevate him to a great college player. That does not happen simply because the player is a 4 star.

Only as much as the player wants to be coached.

Not very much. College game is mental. You can either perform on the big stage or not. Most of them have the ability.

Coaching matters. Saban’s gift is to improve not only individual players, but entire teams and programs (at least at the college level)- not only by unsurpassed recruiting but also by unprecented winning.
