read last paragraph

Item was on agenda for today but someone decided it needed further discussion

Question is - Who thought this was a good idea to begin with?

IF TJ provides the improvement expected this year then that would be an appropriate discussion at the end of the season- I think it is premature to offer an extension before then

A proposed one-year extension for men’s basketball coach Trent Johnson was also on Friday’s agenda, but the item has been sent back to campus for further discussion.

Good.

Do we assume Aleva had it on the agenda and unofficially some board members kicked it back?

This is a very important recruiting class. Perhaps they are just trying to let the recruits know that the administration is behind him. More of a PR move.

I have never understood why fans get so uptight over coaches' salaries and contracts. It's not your money.

I thought they used ticket sales to help pay salaries

A PR move?

Then it was a bad one.

The administration sends it on for approval, but the board kicks it back...

Oh, so you think buying tickets gives you ownership?

Do you have this same belief about movies, concerts, plays, etc?

Also, LSU is going to charge market rates for tickets. If you think that they are going to raise or lower the cost, based on the coach's salary, you are wrong.

This!!!!!!!!

Although I do think a coach should have to earn his extensions and raises based on his performance and I dont think you can argue TJ has done anything the past two years to merit either!

I like Trent and I still believe he can and will get it done here, but an extension right now is a bit premature. He's got this year and next on his deal, let's see where we are at after the season. Even if we show improvement and are headed in the right direction, there will be time to get this deal done in the spring.

It's time to throw the ball in the air and see what we've got. I'm ready to go.

I never said I agree with the extenstion, but I don't really care either way. Coaches' salaries and contracts are not an important issue to me.

If giving him an extension is good for recruiting, then I'm for it. Otherwise, I don't care.

First $900K to a womens basketball coach who's sport doesn't bring a nickel of profit to the university, and now this.......Alleva is sure on a roll. Though if it doesn't effect Johnsons buyout if he gets run after this year, I guess it really doesn't matter.

I don't think anyone implied that. To the contrary, your point about tickets being priced to market value can be used in favor of waiting a year for an extension to be granted.

Again, why do you care about how much coaches make?

These decisions are not made on profitability. Even the LSU baseball team has not made a profit throughout the vast majority of its existance, until probably late 90s or sooner.

If profitability were a factor, LSU would have three teams: football, men's basketball and baseball. However, the baseball team would have nobody to play, because virtually no other school has a profitable baseball team.

Because as a football season ticket holder with 8 tickets, I know the burden will be on myself, in addition to the other football season ticket holders to pay for this absurdity.

Bubba, I don't think most people care one way or the other about the contracts themselves, but maybe they would like to see a little improvement in program before rewarding TJ with another year.

Yeah, and nobody is buying the tickets, therefore, it's not your money.

So, do you think that if they would have hired a coach for $100,000, or even disbanded the entire women's basketball program, that your season tickets would decrease?

I can assure you they would not.

so as long as your taxes stay the same you don't care what they do with the money?
