quote:

The first scrimmage, it was defense. The defense was dominating," Orgeron said at his weekly press conference. "The second scrimmage it was offense, which makes the head coach happy. It doesn't make the defensive coaches happy, but it makes the head coach happy. It's been even, to be honest with you.

quote:

"I will say this, we are so much better on defense right now than any part of the season last year. I feel Bo Pelini coming in, he's brought a new energy, a new excitement, the 4-3. Dave Aranda did a tremendous job for us, but I'm glad we moved to the 4-3. We're more attacking style of defense, using our personnel. Bo's done a tremendous job for us."

quote:

QB Myles Brennan: 12-of-18 for 194 yards, two touchdowns and an interception

quote:

QBs TJ Finley and Max Johnson: "Finley and Johnson went 7-out-of-14, 7-out-of-13. Finley had 121 yards passing, Johnson had 83. He had two long runs. Max continues to make plays with his feet, very, very mobile quarterback."

quote:

TE Arik Gilbert: Three catches for 34 yards

RB Tyrion Davis-Price: Six carries for 77 yards

RB Chris Curry: 74 yards rushing

If Shelvin can somehow opt back in, i predict this team only loses 1 game

For price to get 77 on 6 carries is impressive.

This does not compute.

Well, this is rather surprising, given how the defense played over the final three games of our undefeated national championship season. If that statement is accurate, our defense should be dominant.

Emery dominated on the highlight video, but doesn't get mentioned?

Those 14 game single season averages would be:

6th all time passing yards in LSU history

2nd all time Touchdowns in LSU history

3rd all time completion percentage in LSU history.

works for me

Sounds like we’ll run the ball about 50%. With the way the off-season has been and the backs we have, I’m not mad at that approach

I think we're only losing one game even without Shelvin.

Big statement.

But does it speak on a drop off of offense, or is the defense that much better??!!

Greatly improved defense + slightly less effective offense = another great season

Something tells me Shelvin wouldn’t be playing more than two plays in a row for a while.

It's probably a little bit of both. You can see from the stats that we're running the ball a good bit, a testament to an experienced QB/WR group and good secondary. Our own secondary (and maybe defense overall) is probably the best we'll see all year.

nearly 11 yards per attempt is pretty fricking good. that's about what burrow averaged last season

Orgeron likes to take jabs at Aranda when he can too. I don’t see how defense is that much better considering what all we lost and the lack of depth up front. Might be more of a reflection of our offense taking longer to come together up front than anything.

I do think this team is being slept on and will surprise people. We aren’t the only team in history to lose talent and replace it. That’s why we recruit well each year.

66%
16 yards per completion
Hate to see the pick but it's going to happen (Burrow threw 6 last season). Especially considering the pick was to Stingley.

Dave is a great DC, but let's be honest, Pelini is a cut above. Our personnel this season probably fits 4-3 better anyway, too. Made the transition a little quicker/easier than most teams.

Coach speak

There is absolutely no earthly possibility we are better on defense right NOW, losing what we lost, with no Spring, and 4 weeks into fall practice than we were at the end of last year when the defense was destroying teams like UGA, Oklahoma, and Clemson.
