While making an appearance on college football show "Big Noon Kickoff," Orgeron proclaimed that the 2020 LSU roster from top to bottom is right there as the most talented team he's seen since being named head coach after the 2017 season.

"This is a great opportunity, we've got a lot of hungry guys on this football team," Orgeron said. "We have a great roster right now, we've got as great a talent as any year that I've been here."

quote:

There was one caveat to Orgeron's answer and that comes with the unknown at the quarterback position. Junior Myles Brennan has waited patiently but now it's his turn to prove he can lead this team on the field.

Orgeron pointed to the quarterback position as the one that will make or break LSU's team this year, reiterating the point that the program doesn't expect Brennan to be Joe Burrow but rather the best Myles Brennan he can be.

"That is the position that is going to have to show up in order for us to have success," Orgeron said. "Myles has a really strong arm, he's very talented but we can't expect Myles to be Joe Burrow. If he's Joe Burrow, there's nobody that will be disappointed I promise you that. We’re not going to put a lot of pressure on him. We've got a lot of talent, we've got a lot of receivers. Making the right decisions at the right time will be key."

quote:

"I really believe we're going to be better on defense, we didn't play to the standard we wanted to play at last year and that's the reason I brought in Bo Pelini," Orgeron said. "Bo has wholesale change opportunity, it's his defense. When I go in there, I'm the assistant defensive line coach, I'm going to support him in any way I can. Scott Linehan has brought in some new ideas, he and Steve [Ensminger] have full control of the offense."

quote:

Orgeron said it still hasn't sunk in completely about what that 2019 team accomplished because the coaching staff has been focused on the 2020 season. The ring ceremony on Tuesday night helped Orgeron reminisce as many of the players were able to return for the event.

"It was beautiful, it was a great memory and now it's time to move on," Orgeron said.

I love the attitude that he's not really even relishing 2019. Back to business.

We just need football season to happen.

It is eyeopening to see how great O's roster constructing has been compared to the back end of the Les Miles era.

I'm really excited to see how aggressive our defense will be.

This team probably has more total team talent than anyone in the country. If they can just execute consistently on offense it could be another special season. Still need a whole bunch of bounces go our way.

I rewatched the UGA game last night.

Woof. Some of the things he did in that game will be hard to replace.

Yeah, I caught that too. Before the 2019 season O was adamant that he wanted an aggressive, attacking D and we did just the opposite vs Texas and chose to contain Ehlinger. The result was he sat in a clean pocket and picked us apart. If Burrow doesn't go off that game we would have lost to an inferior team.

You could sense his frustration in the 1st half of the season with the D. He was mad about lack of pressure and poor tackling. To Aranda's credit though, the last part of the season the D was money and was a big part of the championship run.

Aranda is/was a great DC. He just has a different concept than what Coach O prefers.

It's going to be hard for folks to temper expectations. Some of the stuff Burrow did last season was otherworldly.

Unfortunately there will be a lot of people that will view Brennan through the prism of Burrow's season.

Listening to Mike D yesterday he has LSU with 10 likely draft pics next year and another 5 on watch lists.

That means a possibility of 10-15 more Tigers in the NFL after a season where you put 20 players in the NFL in '20 when you combine 14 draft picks and 6 free agents.

That's strong to quite strong.

Only chink in O's armor in regards to recruiting at LSU has been his '18 class. Too many misses in that class IMO. He has made up for it though by bringing in transfers and filling empty roster spots with better players in subsequent classes.

It’s not reasonable to expect him to be Burrow, but I think it’s completely reasonable to expect he will be right up there with Jamie Newman, Kyle Trask, and Mac Jones, and maybe even better than some of them.

If our defense is as nasty as it looks on paper, he may not even have to be.

Can Myles do the same thing????? That’s my biggest question. It seems like he has all the physical tools. It’s his instincts and getting the offense to believe in him that worry me.... he will no way have the kind of season Burrow had numbers wise, but Joe made some key choices last year that help us to get where we ended up. Those are the things I’m looking for from Myles......

This is what I have been saying all along. LSU is strongly in the fight for the CFP and a NYesr.

Coach O said the same thing every coach of every team has said before every season in every sport.

Fixed it for you.....

This is something very underrated about Orgeron, especially juxtaposed with Miles. His recruiting has intention to it. Having a top 5 class is great, but when Miles gets a top 5 class bolstered by wide receivers and tight ends in the top 100 when he had a 1970's philosophy, it doesn't go as far. Also, there was seemingly always a position group with gaps (e.g. LB around 2014-2015).

Orgeron recruits with his philosophy in mind and with roster management in mind. We're not 100% there but there is virtually no worry at any position about not being at least 2 deep.

Remember last off season when you said LSU needed another 2 classes before they could plug and play?

You hit this right on the head. O doesn't seem like the guy that promises something and it's not delivered. It's not what he said our defense was going to be.

However, Aranda did what Aranda does, and the defense played great in the back half of the season.

What I'm confused about is we seem to see the same trends in our D coordinators. We saw it with Chavis. After 2011, we became a very conservative, contain-oriented defense.

At Wisconsin, Aranda was known for having a disruptive, 1-gap, 3-4 defense that created a ton of pressure. And in his first year, we saw more sacks and interceptions. Greg Gilmore had 7 sacks That totally faded as time went on.

I'm not a football analyst, so I don't know the reason for this. I just wonder what happened and if it's just a trend that all defensive coordinators go through as coaches figure out ways to attack them?

That's because he didn't have that HC credibility yet. Still a lot of doubters and naysayers internally and externally at that point. Now, especially with a national title, he can maximize his potential as a recruiter because the underlying question of if this guy can lead a successful program has been answered. This allows him to focus solely on relationship building instead of convincing people he is someone to follow.
