General rule of thumb is that you don’t want the HC of your team to have less than 4 years on his current deal. This is for recruiting purposes as oncoming guys want to know that the head man has the years- at least contract wise- to be their coach for their full time at a school.

So question, is LSU extending O as he only has 3 left after this season?

Yes, but I don’t think it’s that big a deal as long as you leave yourself an out with a manageable buyout after 2020 if need be.

Get the same amount for winning as you do for just appearing? What a schmuck.

What kind of rule of thumb is that?

Follow up to this would be, what’s the season win total that would NOT warrant a year being added?

I have long contended that with the OOC cup cake games and the fertile recruitng grounds of LA that 8 wins is almost a guarantee every year here.

It’s $150k for the appearance, $300k for a win.

An extension should be out of the question if we lose to A&M. I'd be ok with extending his contact with no buyout increase if we finish 11-2 and ranked in the top 10.

The normal kind in every major D1 power 5 conference athletic department.

They all operate under this unwritten rule.

How do you recruit kids to come stay 3-5 years when the administration doesn’t have faith to have the HC under contract for at least as long?

It shows a lack of confidence by the athletic department to have otherwise that the HC is out guy and the program is stable.

How do you not know this?

We all know the buyout will increase so I’m against any raise until O can prove he can fix the offense. None of this is better than Les if we can’t fix the offense. If he wants a raise then he better do what he was hired to do. Winning 10 games 1 season won’t cut it. In my opinion he still owes LSU the cost of Canada’s buyout for not knowing who the hell he was hiring in canada. That’s on him and he owes LSU that so piss on an extension this year.

The answer is Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Now maybe next year is he goes 10-2 or 11-1 then yes you can extend him but not after one good year. Whats he going to do if you dont extend him go somewhere else?

Maybe 11-2 would get him extended, but I think after next year would be a better time to decide that

Why even discuss this at this point?

Goodness. Let it play out.

Why extended any time earlier than a year? He is not going to be in demand. He could win a ship and still not be in demand.. or really wanting to go any where. Of course I would not care what we did if he won a ship, just making a point. Haven’t we learned to just let the contracts play out?

Just an FYI - Joe's contract expires next summer. The bigger question is whether or not he gets an extension.

This narrative is so over-played. Contracts can be and indeed are bought out or terminated prematurely all the time. A coach's job security isn't inherently tied to the length of his contract. The direction of the program (or perception of that direction by those in charge) and the results on the field dictate a coach's job security far more than how many years are left on his contract.
