Chris Jackson is one of two LSU athletes I've ever seen in any sport who was capable of completely taking over and dominating any game he was in.

The other one is Tyrann Mathieu.

i'd throw Cecil Collins in there too...

Read the book by Dale Brown called don't count me out... there's a chapter in there where Dale talks about Chris Jackson growing up in Gulfport Miss.... he says that When Chris Jackson was in the 8th grade he played on the JV team ... one game the team scored like 64 points, Chris had 60 of them by himself....how they would shoot free throws before practice till you would miss.... then start practice.... the coach had to suspend that because Chris shot over 100 free throws in a row after the 1st two practices.... says how he would stay at the playground near his home shooting hoops in the dark till his mom would call him to come home....and he wouldn't go home until he made one particular hard shot.... even if he couldn't hardly see the goal in the dark.... this dude was phenomenal... not many ever played the college game as good as Jackson... watch the LSU- LOYOLA MARYMOUNT game on YouTube... never was a game ever played at such a high pace as that one... they burnt up the teletype by halftime.... BEST game I ever witnessed live... hell, I even needed Gatorade at halftime.... lol... watch the 1989 LSU-OLE MISS game on YouTube also.. Chris Jackson vs Gerald Glass... best matchup ever... Jackson scored 55 points Glass scored 53 points.... was a Kodak moment..

it was a dream of mine to play basketball or football for LSU, but mainly basketball.... that was my sport that i excelled in....

I remember he used to have this between the legs dribble/shoot move that I spent hours upon end trying to copy and perfect.

I had watched both the Loyola Marymount and Ole miss game as a child. Don't forget when LSU had beat UNLV also. CJ was a one man show and UNLV was #1 in the nation.

CJ averaged 32ppg as a FRESHMAN.

Best scorer in SEC since Pistol Pete. I saw him and Allen Houston in a shootout in Knoxville. Fans up there still talk about it. UT had three guys chasing him on the perimeter and he was still knocking them down.

So, how good was Chris in college exclusively?
Where does he rank all time in purple and gold?
Top 5/10 list?
For college only, Chris was absolutely the best I have ever seen, not just at LSU but any college player. He far outshone Shaq. Shaq was a giant of a man, CJ was an impossible scoring machine.

Note- I am too young to have seen Maravich.

CJ has to be #2 here, behind only the Pistol

Chris Jackson was the best scoring guard I have ever seen play in college. He was unreal.

This. He was unreal. He was to college basketball what Steph Curry is to the NBA right now.

This is the one thing about CJ that I try to convey to my son. The difference between him and Curry right now is that Curry often seems to just huck balls up and they magically go in. Chris Jackson used to do that little dribble between the legs that would just freeze his opponent, and he'd pull up for a beautiful long range jumper that always seemed to go in.

Comparable to anybody?
No, honestly. People remind me of him, but they don't equal what he did.

Whenever CJ would get hot, it was like he was in a video game, and someone gave him all the cheat codes. He'd do things you not only don't expect someone to do, you'd think "he shouldn't be able to do that".

Coming off a baseline screen and catching the ball, and releasing a 3, and you're not sure he even saw the basket before he released. And he would head upcourt on the release, to play defense... and the ball just pops the net, no rim a lot of time. Just unreal how easy he did it.

Littlest guy on the court, and he would occasionally get an alley oop for a 2 handed jam.

Often overlooked was his short game; there were times that people were trying to overplay the 3, and he'd come inside and hit a 16 ft bankshot, like it was a layup for him.

Simple math formula for you:

Chris Jackson - Turret's = Steph Curry

Seriously. He was such a great shooter.

Just watch the Chris Jackson vs. Gerald Glass (Ole Miss) video. About the best back-and-forth show between two phenomenal players that you'll ever see. Chris Jackson was like magic.

If this gives you any idea about how well he could shoot the ball. This is him shooting around at 43 years old.

Nah. Sadly, the Tourettes was partly what forged him into the magical player he was. It was tied to being OCD, so his personal practice was scary...like someone else mentioned earlier. He stay out shooting, not just until he made the last shot, but until hit hit no iron. Over and over...like it hurt not to do it.

When my son came down with a tic disorder (it's passed thank goodness) the FIRST thing I thought of was CJ's head bobbing against his will coming down court. It was both beautiful and sad to watch the guy play...knowing how much he was struggling but appreciating just how incredible his gifts were.

And might I add, thanks a TON for everyone keeping this thread on topic! I adored CJ, and could talk about him for hours...so it's nice, for once, to have a discussion about his days at LSU and what a tremendous player he was without going all nuts about his time in the NBA.

Seriously...

Ncaa freshman scoring record 30.2ppg he was better than durant Simmons oden or any other freshman you can think of. As far as lsu greats it's pistol shaq and Chris Jackson he's top 3. I know I know petit but basketball wasn't nearly the sport it was when cj got here hoops popularity came in the 80s petit had bad luck playing in the wrong era.
