Anyone else at LSU when Cholly Mac ran the 2 QB offense??

It was successful with Bert Jones.

I’m a little too young to remember Bert at LSU but I do remember the 2 QB system with Woodley and Ensminger

He started doing it out of necessity when his starter got hurt, but over time it's almost like he forgot he could go back to one and just kept doing it for no reason. Bert Jones should have never been splitting reps

Would’ve been nice to see Bert Jones play complete games.

Nothing that happened 50 years ago is relevant right now.

2 QB systems are trash

Asked whether he would be open to playing two quarterbacks, Kelly’s shoulders slumped for melodramatic effect and he put his head in his hands.

“Nightmares,” Kelly said. “Nightmares.

“I've played two, yes. I think (against) LSU when I was at Notre Dame in the Music City Bowl, I played two. It's not easy. It has to be a situation where you have to do it. I would much rather just play one quarterback and try to fit the offense to their traits over somebody else. The two-quarterback situation is so difficult to manage.”

In Cholly Mac's day, his 2 QB system was a constant source of fan debate, division, and distraction. Today, with the Rant and other social media, the distraction and negativity would be off the charts. NOT good, if it can be avoided.

Not really a fan of the 2 QB system. I guess it can work in certain rare situations. I did kind of like what LSU with Hodson and Guidry.

What’s really interesting is what they did in 1958 - Rabb, Matherne, and Jenkins all played QB… and it was Cannon who threw the TD to beat Clemson

Likely due to rules back then that limited individual substitutions in favor of “platooning”. Typically each platoon (White Team, Go Team, and Chinese Bandits) had a QB who recorded playing time in games.

The reason Cholly Mac used two QBs is because he lost more than one starting QB to injuries. It was difficult for the team when he had to insert an inexperienced QB. As a reaction to this, he went to a two QB system. So, if one QB fell, he still had another with experience.

Why would any coach want to take Bert Jones off the field?

Did you ask Bert about this? He was NFL MVP in 1976. Why would this guy only play half of every game in college. I recall a quote when he said the highlight of his LSU career was graduating. Pretty sure that was meant as a jab at Cholly Mac’s system. I don’t think he was a fan of it.

If you honestly believe that this was a two QB system then you are a lost cause and there is no helping you. Having a guy come is every now and then and run the option is NOT a two QB system. Perilloux never attempted passes when Flynn was healthy and dressed out for games. That’s not a 2 qb system

Before Burrow, I considered Bert Jones the best quarterback in the history of LSU football. He should have been the full time starter. That said, it is a good thing Paul Lyons came in in the 1972 Tulane game. He saved the day when Bert was struggling.

Still gives me heartburn to think about it.

Sports Illustrated came to BR to interview BJ, pre-season, as a Heisman candidate.
Cholly Mac told them he wasn't sure Bert would be the starter.

It seemed to me, when Woodley would get hot, Cholly Mac would replace him with Ensminger.
And vice versa. I hated it.
