doesnt it give the coaches a chance to see how the d lines up before a play is called? what if the first call was bad for whatever formation the d was in and then we have to rely on JJ to make the correct audible?

every fricking play doesn't have to be an audible. Line run and run your shite. Its better than half the offense not knowing what the hell play was called

Only if you're not comfortable with the playbook, i.e. don't know the plays.

If you're comfortable with the playbook and you know the plays, what difference does it make if it's called in the a huddle or at the line of scrimmage?

I can see why it would be an advantage to call the play after you see how the defense is set. IOW, I don't see a problem with it.

After last year's MNC game, the Oklahoma message board called that the "Meerkat Offense"

It breaks up the rhythm of the offense imo. It's just too slow.

I saw Florida doing the "whole-offense-look-to-the-sideline" thing as well. Here is a thread from Gator fans talking about it:

LINK

snips:

our entire offense stops, stands, and looks over to the sideline

Monte Kiffin forced us into the Meerkat Manor Offense

when they rush up to the LOS and then all the backs stand up to check the sign from the coaches

This mearkat "fast break" is basically a no huddle with training wheels. Tim is a senior, so the coaches need to let him go.

I'm no coach but it would seem to me, why not give our 3 year starter TT the liberty to call some plays its not like he can't

The QB is always looking to the sideline for the play, unless he is a Peyton Manning calling his own plays. Having the whole team look to the sideline speeds things up (takes out the step where the QB looks to the sideline and then has to communicate the play to the rest of the offense).

Remember what Troy did to our D last year? A big part of that was how they were using the whole-offense-look-to-the-sideline-thing to speed up their tempo.

Except for the fact that the whole team looks to the sideline...then JJ still runs up to the line and relays the message for another 3-4 ticks off the game clock.

About the same as the supposed chance of rain in Tiger Stadium.

Nothing wrong with it if it's done in a timely manner. But, far too often the call is getting in TOO LATE. Much like the D last year.
I remember one play that we barely got off and Scott looks to the sidelines and tells them to hurry the F up(basically what he said).

Les could abandon the crap but he won't b/c I think he thinks it looks cool or b/c other teams do it. It looks stupid to me, confuses the players who apparantly aren't smart enough to remember the plays. WTF do they do in practice? This look at me sissy crap is a major step backward imo.

According to Les, he told a reporter that it's not the plays called, it's the execution.

Well then go out and execute!

Please flush the "let's let my OL, bend over for 15 seconds before we snap the ball" crap.

The no huddle keeps defenses on their heels, but the Defenses that play us can take a nap between plays since we never snap it before time almost expires. It's nuts!

He's got to learn someday. The whole 'check with me' process completely disrupts our offense's rhythm, imo. Even Rosetta of The Advocate mentioned that this morning in his column. If he can see it, anybody can see it.

BTW, rhythm is the only two syllable English word that does not have a true vowel in it, fwiw.....

true-y is not..... screw it!!!!
Back on topic. We do not execute this look to the sideline crap well enough to justify continuing it imo. The delays alone aren't worth it.

the meerkat offense is the reason you see so many runs and options to the short side

LSU rushes up to the line

formation and play is signaled in while everybody does the meerkat

defense sets up in their base look and usually sets up strong side on the wide side of the field

JJ leans over and tells the guards and center what the play is and what DIRECTION to run it (short side)

hilarity ensues as a 5'6 guy with world class 100m speed tries to beat defenders to the corner before he is run out of bounds

the HS team that I do the radio broadcasts for runs the meerkat and i hate it. I understand why they do it, they are playing a HS sophomore QB and the OC stands on the sidelines and gives the QB a comfort level. But I don't understand why LSU is doing so much of it still.
