Can we talk about the STONES it took to call a QB draw at the end of the half?

Scenario:

3rd and 10 at Clemson 35. No timeouts, 21 seconds left.

I dont know if they saw something they could take advantage of, or if they thought they could just catch Clemson napping, or what. But it was a called draw from the get go. Obviously its 3rd down so if hes stopped short of the first, you cant spike it and gotta rush the field goal team on. So you're banking on gaining at least 10 with a draw or getting out of bounds (unlikely if he gets stopped, it's a draw up the middle). If he gets stonewalled, you're still around the 35 which is a long arse FG with little prep time.

But somehow that gap was there and it was a 29 yard gain to the 6 and he got out of bounds to stop the clock. Scored a TD before half instead of settling for a FG.

I remember watching it live, as soon as I saw Joe tuck it and start running I immediately yelled "WHAT THE frick ARE YOU DOING?!?!" and then he got down to the 6, I just turned to my paw paw and said "I havent seen a mind blowingly ballsier call from LSU since faking a punt out of our own endzone against Arizona State"

But that was the identity of this team. We went for just about every 4th and short, we aimed to gain every 3rd and long, we went for TDs at the end of halfs, not FGs. We went tempo when we had the other team on their heels. We were the most aggressive team I've ever seen on offense. That was our identity and mentality. I hope that mindset carries over to subsequent years, playing like we're not afraid of anybody

What got me about that play was the Clemson player going low on Joe at the end of the play

Joe had a great game with his arm. I really think Clemson was surprised by his running ability , his speed and his ability to see the whole field while at full speed. His legs really won game for us. Slowed the blitzes down big time. Along with middle linebacker getting booted out game. Never heard of that kid but he was def bad arse!

Joe was braced for it and he was a runner so no big deal.

It was wide open the whole first half because of how they were bringing their pressure. Burrow just had to let one guy clear then it was empty up the middle.

Burrow over 30.5 rushing yards was the lock of the decade.

When you are in man on the outside and your blitz up the middle doesn't get home, you get gashed by a smart QB with good running skills.

I think Joe had the go ahead to do that play anytime he saw it.

I would love to know the thought process behind that call because from a rational perspective it made no sense. Nonetheless, it may have been the play of the game. The TD that followed was a back breaker emotionally for Clemson, just like the late TD pass to CEH vs Bama.

You think you are going to “survive” and only give up 3. Then you get hit with an unexpected 7 knowing LSU was getting the ball to start the 2nd half

LSU not only guessed correctly that Clemson was going to blitz, but also the side that the pressure was coming from.

Genius.

I had a feeling they’d call it, just like the Auburn game. Last TD to Marshall was another play from the AU game.

I’ve only rewatched the first half, but it appears that Joe was instructed to key on Simmons. If he turned his back in coverage, look to run. He did it multiple times. That was clearly a called play, but generally speaking, he ran on Simmons. Hell of a game plan and incredible that the QB can see the field and key on that and react so successfully. Joe is Joe

The way O responded to the question from the reporter, I think at halftime, sounded like a pass may have been called, but GOAT noticed and avoided the direction of the blitz, and chose to tuck & run.

I rewatched the “coaches film room” broadcast, or whatever they called it, the other night.

It was clearly a draw and not a scramble, although I guess it could have been a pre-snap read. Regardless, every coach in that room was floored when we ran that play. It was ballsy as hell and completely caught everyone off guard.

If anyone hasn’t watched that version of the broadcast, I’d highly recommend it (other than Gary Patterson being insufferable). Gave me a new appreciation for just how aggressive the playcalling has been on offense. Every time there was a consensus that we should “play it safe” we did the exact opposite.

This makes sense. It goes along with the "one-on-NONE" approach that Brady emphasizes.

If that is indeed the case, Burrow has the fastest reading and decision making skills I've ever seen because he tucked that thing immediately as he got it. Maybe one day we'll get a tell all. To me that play was the defining play of the game if I had to pick any one play, as much as people like the TDs to Chase (which were also nice dont get me wrong).
