Can we put to bed the idea that Kelly was bad in the portal?

The prevailing sports media opinion was that Brian Kelly was weak in the portal and refused to do what it took to fill LSU’s needs.

The top 4 WR are transfers
1 of 5 OL are transfers
2 of top 4 DT are transfers and 4 of top 6
2 of top 4 DE are transfers
DBs have 5 transfers in the two deep, depending on which depth chart you look at.

Looks like he’s using the portal well, IMO

Also got a backup QB with SEC experience

Could it be the new coaches?

We use it to fill gaps. Other coaches are putting full teams together with it. It's why we look good and Ole Miss is losing again.

I have not seen media say that. I have seen a bunch of asshats on TD say that...

We have had a few busts and a few that got away. Nobody was real thrilled with Gio Paez versus Walter Nolen but LSU didnt pay millions for one year of Walter's time either... and Paez has been a steady participant in a group that needs some stability.

It’s year 3. His first class, which he’s mostly inherited are only Juniors. His second are sophomores.

You could use the argument if he had been here 5+ years, but I don’t see how the best players being young is a direct negative reflection on his recruiting.

I don’t speak for Lester but I believe he is saying that the best players being freshmen and sophomores is an indication he is a very good recruiter.

ya, you said it.

Was light in HS schools prospects. They hit on 4 guys, and the rest kind of suck.,

This class heavy in much needed transfer guys that kept this program afloat. Most cycled through in 1-2 years.

He’s thrown for 3000 yards and 22 touchdowns in the SEC as a starter.

As an emergency backup, I’m not sure you could expect much better. He’s third string.

I’ve certainly seen criticism in the media (and obviously here as well) about the DL haul this year. But that has mostly been due to Kelly’s NIL comment, which people have twisted to fit a narrative without actually attempting to understand what he was talking about.

The other thing I’ve seen criticized has been last year’s CB haul. But the best corner in that class tore his ACL, while others are a case study in precisely why the cultural fit matters.

I think overall he’s done an admirable job of:
1. Getting transfers who can play and benefit the team immediately, at a time when we had a depleted roster.
2. Targeting a lot of transfers with multiple years of availability, so that we didn’t have to replace them immediately.
3. Focusing on players who fit the culture he is trying to build.
4. Tapering off of the transfers as the HS recruits developed, so that we can get to the end goal of developing primarily through HS recruiting and supplementing from the portal.

The hit rate hasn’t been 100% obviously, but nobody has a 100% hit rate. And I don’t think it’s easy to smoothly transition back to more of a “home grown” roster. But I think it’s the right move, and will be more sustainable over the long run than relying on 15+ incoming transfers every year.

I think you misinterpreted Lester Earl’s post. He was saying that Kelly is recruiting quite well since most of the best players on the team are freshmen and sophomores.

I think he can and should have done much better at LB and S in the portal. No complaints otherwise.

If you are referring to 2023 and Speights and Oghoufu, I somewhat agree.

Linebacker play last year was awful. I guess you could argue that they were the wrong fit, but with 11 total years of P5 experience, I do not think anyone was faulting him signing those two at the time. I do think its fairly obvious a lot of those issues were on House, whether it was his scheme or coaching players or playing the right kids at the right position, and at the end of the day, House not working out does fall at the feet of Kelly.
