He swung and missed with Brian Kelly and now donors are on the hook again for anywhere between $25-50million+.
He backed into Mulkey because she was leaving Baylor no matter what and was positioning herself for LSU.
He wanted Kevin O’Sullivan and missed. His assistant AD did the leg work to get Jay Johnson.

But what is unique is that 3 major contracts that Woody made had to be bought out before completion (Fisher, O, and now, Kelly).

Without the extension Bjork gave Jimbo that buy out would have been small, O extension made sense after 2019, only “bad” one is Kelly and most people thought that was a great hire at the time.

And both fisher and Kelly were high demand guys with broad approval from the boards and admin of both schools

No fan of how Woodward performed, but I wonder if some of this was due to the fact that he realized early on that Kelly was a massive and expensive mistake. “Meddling” was simply trying to get involved to help cover up Kelly’s shortcomings and make it work out. He’s seen enough successful football programs to know how they work and he understands LSU culture, so he tried to mediate.
