Tigers don't play, or back down.

Back in the day (1960’s ~ 70’s) Mike’s cage would purposely be backed up next to the visitors locker room. When the visiting players opened the door to take the field, the door would hit Mike’s cage causing him to ROAR loudly and reach his extended paws outside the cage. This caused fear in opposing players, and happened to Matt Flynn’s dad Alvin when Baylor played at TS in 1968. LSU won 48-16.

The story gets crazier every year. I was there in the 60's and Mike's cage always had a wire mesh on the outside of the bars. There has never been a time when Mike could reach outside the cage. That's just ridiculous.

According to Alvin Flynn ..... On the way out of the locker room, the door hit the cage housing Mike III. The tiger growled and stuck out his paw. The stunned players walked out of the locker room single-file, hugging the wall. Baylor lost 48-16.

There were simply bars for a period of time upto early 70's. We were playing USC and the USC Cheerleaders brought Sir Spur up to Mike III's cage and he reached out a paw and ate the chicken. I SAW THIS WITH MY OWN EYES!! Next week, the mesh wiring was around the cage.

Like I said, I was there, and that story is ridiculous. TS is a tough place, but not because our mascot is reaching out of his cage with his paws. TS doesn't need that type of embellishment. Just pure nonsense.
