I think the reason is obvious. Max's running threat. Albeit not elite but a threat nonetheless that has to be respected.

Talking about the state of the QB position and who is leading. "Just the buzz that is going around...Max Johnson has a leg up".

He also mentioned an obvious point; while the QB position is strong now, if Max gets named starter Myles might transfer and vise versa. Then we are left with a starting QB and a true freshman backup.

This was on Jordy's show this morning.

Still let the best man win.

I still Think you need to be able to stretch the defense downfield.

Neither of our 2 main candidates looked to good against a decent defense.

Both seemed to lock in on Boutte in the spring game.

Let’s see how fall goes.

Honestly, I think coaches answer those types of things trying there best to stir shite up. If I am a head coach in the SEC and I have a chance to add fuel to a QB controversy at another team anonymously, I am definitely doing it.

That being said, what they said isnt exactly false.

What decent defense did Johnson look bad against?

Perhaps this isn't Brennan's mindset (which is admirable), but he definitely could press the issue NOW on naming a starter and would probably be justified in doing so. If he's thinking he would transfer if Max is the starter then I suspect he would want to make that decision now rather than the fall when transferring would essentially waste one of his two remaining years of eligibility.

From there standpoint the coaches don't want to commit to either guy.

They won't name a starter until very close to kickoff, so they'll both still be here. Whichever one is named the starter is not guaranteed to be the starter all year anyway, so it would serve the other best to stick it through. You never know what can happen this season and into the offseason, but even if one leaves after this season, you still have Nuss here and Howard coming in.

Don't take for granted that he is a lefty. A good lefty is very hard to defend.

I watched both QBs closely on every passing down. Brennan was much more predictable with his eyes. He rarely goes to this first option and uses half the field on every passing down except one down where he used 3/4ths of the field. I hope those are not tendencies that other defensed can key on in the film room. If so, he is not pulling safeties out of position with is eyes. In other words safeties that do their homework will recognize his tendencies.

As for Max he used the entire field a lot of the time. Of course if his first option was open he went there and if no option was open he used his feet. Max does a better job of throwing WRs open simply by getting the safeties out of position by a half a step with his eyes.

Just pulling from the actual article. They didn't identify the coach, but below is what was in the "Coach's Section."
quote:

On the quarterback battle, he said: “I liked Max Johnson. (We think he might be in the lead.) He should be. I think the kid’s a freaking stud. I think he’s really good.”

Brody wrote the following:
quote:

multiple sources have told The Athletic that Johnson seems to have the leg up — However, this feels far from over.

It makes sense. Myles put up some pretty stats but crumbled under pressure, in the red zone, and on the goalline

Max should be the starter even if that means Myles transfers out

I know it sounds chicken little, but I'm scared if Max Johnson wins the job, it scares away Howard (and potentially Nuss).

That's several years they'd sit on the bench.

And third down conversions.

I'm an old Saints fan and Brennan reminds me of Jim Everett. The dude had a talented arm, put up great stats when it did really count and couldn't put up the stats to win games when it counted. Winning QBs and teams make plays and put up stats when it matters.

so you are saying he hits his secondary wr most of the time but is predictable with his eyes?

they will ignore him looking at his first option because he goes through his progressions?

Younger QBs tend to not go through their progressions as well as more experienced qbs

I personally don't care who starts. Without knowing what the read is for the qb and how they are taught to go through their progressions I, unlike you apparently, do not know what his reads are supposed to be without knowing the play call or having a playbook...for instance how can you know if MB isn't looking at his 3rd option to fool the defense and coming back to the read (1st option) the coaches and his film study of the defense have taught him to read?

Even if MJ was/is massively ahead in the QB battle, we desperately need both to be on our roster come September so it wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense to anoint Max this early

Johnson is gonna be the starter, would be a nice story for Myles, but I just do not see it. Also, do not sleep on Nuss, the guy is the real deal

who you want behind you if a fight breaks out ? Max or Myles ?

Whoever you choose should also be your starting qb

for me, that's Max
