start vs. Florida (by far the best opponent either of the two faced).
I want to start by saying I don’t care who the starter is because I think LSU has two really good to great options. I do think Brennan was better at purely playing QB and has the higher ceiling but Johnson is still a solid QB and would be a more talented Etling type at QB.
With that said Florida may have been the best team but they were in no way the best defense they faced. Florida’s defense was garbage all year.

Dude that is a gif of a WR completely torching a DB and getting over a yard of seperation
The greatness of the throw is not hitting a WR that beat #13....it's the touch it takes to float it over #2 who was right in front of the WR. And to get it over #2 with enough space for the WR to make the catch without going out of the back of the endzone. Throw the ball on a line, it is intercepted. Throw it with too much air, it is out of bounds. He had a very small window in which to fit it and layered it in perfectly....after rolling out and hitching up when the DE/OLB cut off his path. That is a high degree of difficultly throw.

What about Johnson’s 3rd down%. It was in the teens but you guys don’t know or care to know that. You also use running plays against Brennan which is totally dishonest.

No one has mentioned this yet, but I feel like it needs to be acknowledged. The OL play during Brennan's starts was some of the worst I've seen in a long time. Utter confusion with their assignments, and zero run blocking ability. Remember it wasn't until the USC game last year that LSU had something that even resembled a running game.
They got better as the season went on, and looked halfway decent at the end of the year when Max was playing.
To sum it up, you had the less mobile QB with the worst OL, and the more mobile QB with the better OL.

We didn’t run it well or tried to run it early on too.

Brennan & LSU offense goes 0-10 on 3rd down
Most overrated stat ever.
Against Florida we went 8-10.
We actually punted more vs Florida than Missouri. We scored more TDS against Missouri than Florida.
The biggest differences in those games is the defense showing up against Florida, and a blocked FG against Missouri.

Sounds like you think Tim Tebow should still be a starting QB in the NFL...
That's the main difference between offense in the NFL versus college. When was the last time you saw a ref call a penalty for illegal man downfield in college? It is very rare. The call is a lot more strictly enforced in the NFL which is a disadvantage for running QBs. It's a huge advantage in college because it freezes LBs if you have a running QB and QBs are able to make quick throws to open WRs over the middle.
Brennan is not running a threat so LBs will just look at the tape and learn to sit back in coverage not worrying about his legs. They only have to play pass against Brennan. They have to play both pass and run against Max.

How
Without turnovers on short fields in that game, LSU might score 24pts. Because they couldn’t move the ball otherwise.
They had a big catch and run from Marshall but the offense wasn’t great at all. And that 3rd down stat reflects that

Cmon man! Next you'll be telling me that Matt Corral's 6 turnovers and pick 6 played a big role in the Ole Miss win.

Now apply your qualifiers to Johnson. Take away the 2 TDs the defense effectively scored vs Florida, take away the turnovers vs Ole Miss and take away any big YAC plays while he was the starter.

Brennan reminds me of Jim Everett of the Saints. The dude put up great stats but could never make plays when it counted. He was a garbage time stat man.

King, find one post of mine lauding max Johnson’s stats. Just one.
Posted on 7/14/21 at 4:52 pm to GumboPot
And that would make Johnson Heath Shuler?
Posted on 7/14/21 at 4:54 pm to Lester Earl
Didn’t mention you lauding stats but what you are doing is using double standard comparisons and unequal criticisms.

That seems about right and paints a narrative of my main concern with the QB position, the ceiling.
Nice depth but lower ceiling compared to other SEC QB position groups.

He threw for 430 yds and 4 TDs vs Mizzou when the run game managed only 49 yards and the D gave up 586 yards and 45 points. Someone didn't do their job and it wasn't Myles.

It should be up to Jake Peetz to decide who fits what he wants to do best.
This.. While imo opinion its difficult to refute Brennan is the better QB to put your team in a position to win based upon last years games, there are two questions which no one knows the answer to at the moment. They are:
1) What if any lingering impact will Brennans injury have on his production..
2) How much has Johnson developed since his last game.
Only Jake Peetz and company know the answer to these questions..

I disagree on the ceiling and here’s why. If Brennan is 100% and picks up the offense enough to separate himself with his arm talent the ceiling is very high. If Max has improved enough to surpass Brennan the ceiling is also extremely high. If they’re the same we still had the 4th best passing game in the SEC even with Finley dragging those numbers way down.

Sorry but if you can’t win a shootout against Missouri going +3 on TO, you ain’t had a top 5 pick kinda day lol
Didn't he play 3/4 of the game with a serious injury?
Do you think that could have been a factor?
