Where, oh where, is Tiger Ree?

It appears LSU is trying to run an offensive scheme that requires their OL to be a bit more athletic than normal...and they just don't have athletes. They have multiple guys that are probably TOO big to move well (Deculus, Hines, Bradford) and a center that is undersized for the SEC. If LSU was running an approach that relied more on raw power I think this OL would be ok (ex: Hines was good in 2018...but hasn't approached that level since the offense changed in 2019)

IMO, this is one of O's biggest flaws. He wants offensive and defensive approaches to LOOK a certain way...but doesn't take into account that maybe his personnel isn't best suited to play that way. Oversized OL; TDP at RB; LBs who aren't great inside linebackers.

With how late he came in, I think Davis is teaching more individual technique and motivational rah rah.
Peetz is probably responsible for most of the blocking "scheme"

Doesn't matter when you don't have the horses to pull the plow.

Does flipping tires count as a blocking scheme?

I believe the issue is the talent level

I went through our o-line recruiting since 2017. We've signed 20 players with an average ratings of 3.5 stars. 4 of those players never made it to campus. That gives us an average of only 3 o-linemen signed per year, which is means the evaluation better be spot on or you're up a creek. I'd say the chickens have finally come to roost on our horrendous o-line recruiting for the past 5 cycles.

Last week I decided to analyze a couple run plays on my DVR and it appears to me that the line, the QB, and the RB are not on the same page.
Against MSU we ran a 3rd and 1 run play and the entire line backed up and pass blocked. TDP made the FD by the minimum. WTF!

A couple plays later we ran a zone run right and the tackle end gap was wide open as the OL pushed the entire DL left effectively. The safety got off the WR block and made the tackle on TDP about 3 yds upfield. An ankle tackle...

Another play the RB ran up the middle and ran face first into his own OT blocking down... at the point of the handoff the left end was sealed and WAF open and was a realistic option.

Didn’t he transfer 3 years ago too? He has literally been starting for 3 years and haven’t found a better replacement.

Sorry 2 years ago, but still.

The common conception has been that the offensive line should be composed of the smartest players on the team. I’m wondering if we also don’t have the sharpest knives in the drawer playing offensive line.

People keep saying he's new but he seems to be making no improvement whatsoever. I'm not gonna keep giving him a pass. A good oline coach shouldn't have guys getting ran over and whiffing all the time.

It's been a disaster so far. I realize he came in late. And, I realize he doesn't have a bunch of talent to work with. But, even so, the absolute continuous confusion is hard to accept.

More than perhaps any other position group on a football team, the O-line has to think and act as one. It's hard to build that kind of unit cohesion when you come into a situation in the middle of the summer and then don't have your projected starting five together at all during pre-season camp. And, on an individual level, it takes time to correct fundamental technique issues. You can't just tell a guy "do it this way" and the problem goes away. It takes a lot of repetition over an extended period of time to re-learn basic technique issues. This is true of an athlete, a musician, or anyone else who has to master complex physical tasks.

It's a frustrating situation for Davis and for his players and, unfortunately, there's not a quick fix. We can hope that the line might get somewhat better as the season goes on, but the only real solution is time for Davis to work with the younger guys and bring in his own recruits. I only hope he has the chance to do so.

Arkansas did not fall apart when he left in June and was replaced by a SoMs/Former TU coach.
