Multiple people leading it means no one was leading it. Not a good look there ole Brian.

Yeah I was about to say, I know Faulk housed one vs ND. But that was at ND. And right after one of those "nobody has returned a kickoff vs Notre Dame since..." and I believe just after Faulk fumbled.

For that matter, didn't Fournette return a kickoff for a TD vs ND in the Music City?

Kelly was wise. He realized that special teams were not that important anymore. As long as you can get punts off without huge returns and make your field goals the rest hardly matters. Offenses chew up yards so fast that field position is far less important than ball security. Were our special teams bad? Did they cost us any games? Kinda and No.

Here's a wild stat according to ncaa.com

LSU only had TWO punts returned against us (non fair catches) all season for a grand total of -1 yards.

Second only to UGA who somehow had ZERO punts returned against them all season.

think how bad arse it would be to make 350k to just only coach punt teams and then you only had to punt 12 times all season

Punts and kick offs have literally lost us games. We need a dedicated ST coach. Such an underrated aspect of the game

Not to mention some sort of threat to block punts

Yeah, somehow I neglected to put "in Tiger Stadium" even though I meant to.

Here is the list of all LSU kick returns for touchdowns that are listed on https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/louisiana-state/scoring.html

I am suspicious that older data may not be incorporated here but not sure. So 8 total kickoff returns in LSU history based on this. 3 of those were in Tiger Stadium (in bold). Only Trindon Holliday has more than one, he has two and so accounts for 25% of all kickoff return TDs in Tiger Stadium. Half vs SEC teams, 7 of 8 vs P5 teams.

ETA: Eddie Kennison Independence bowl return is not listed on the website. I added it and any others that I can confirm I will add in itallics. The total is now 9 total KORs

Hokie Gajan
1978 vs Wyoming 99 yards on the opening kickoff

Eric Martin
1981 vs Kentucky 100 yards

Eddie Kennison
1995 Neutral site vs Michigan State 92 yards

Kevin Faulk
1998 @ Notre Dame 88 yards

Trindon Holliday
2006 @ Arkansas 92 yards
2007 @ Ole Miss 99 Yards

Morris Claiborne
2011 @ WVU 99 yards

Leonard Fournette
Neutral site vs Notre Dame 89 yards

Trey Palmer 2020 vs South Carolina 93 yards

I also see Robert Dow listed as having a Kick Return TD but no punt return TD in 1976 but the box score I looked at shows a punt return TD but no kick return TDs.

Really…I think Kelly just had too much shite to worry about when he got here…if he gets the defense stabilized then we may see some focus that direction.

Bama didn’t have one either…so maybe Kelly was just looking at Nick and seeing what worked for him.

I can’t fricking wait to see the “Million Dollar Leg” on our freshman kickoff specialist next year. Why anyone would posture that way I have no idea.

Modern special teams is all about getting accurate punts and kicks away. Covering kicks is the next priority and very few teams prioritize returns or punt coverage.

There are just so many hours in a day.

I can’t remember the Ole Miss game completely, but I think if you had 55-57 yard range on FGs we might have picked up more points. Maybe not though.

Very few college kickers have that range. Would never count on special teams to deliver that consistently no matter how good they are.

IDK, I’m a kicker dad (son is a Jr in HS) and I guess I’m just too close to have an accurate perspective.

To me, it better damn well be in your range…obviously depending on wind and conditions…if you’re an SEC kicker…and your team HAS to have it.

Did you not watch any games? We did not do well at all covering kick offs and we only fair caught punts. Y’all forget how much momentum a good return gives the offense.

Is tour kid consistently nailing 55-57 yards kicks? And is he doing it in actual games?

If so, where is he going to play in college because he’ll be one of the most sought after kickers in the country.

Yep. And there is more incentive now to fair catch/kneel KOs.

A guy who could give you a return threat on punt returns would be a great added bonus, but not a necessity. The ST debacle last year (and early this season) was not the lack of a return game. It was that LSU couldn't catch the damn ball. You shouldn't need a dedicated coach to find a guy who can.

The kick/punt coverages were fine this year and Ramos made 80% of his FG attempts (12/15) and 100% of his XPs (77/77)
