My list is:

The loss of Bo Rein before he ever coached a game, I think he would have been Saban 20 years sooner.

Dismissal of Ryan Perilloux. He likely changes the perception of LSU as a poor destination for top QBs. Probably alter the perception of some regarding Les Miles as well

Hiring Mike Archer instead of Steve Spurrier in '87. Speaks for itself. Interesting that the guy who recommended Archer over Spurrier ater hired Sperrier at Florida, if I recall correctly.

The year after LSU won the NC in football(1958), a 2 point conversion after a TD against Tennessee failed even when it appeared that Billy Cannon broke the plain of the goal line. The Tigers lost that game 14-13. With a win it could have given them 2 NC's in a row. Now LSU did finish with a lost to Ole Miss in the sugar bowl, but could still be Champions because the Polls recognized the season only as it's NC's in those days. This was the same year of Cannons run earlier against Ole Miss. Another redo like the one a few years ago. And the very same score as the recent redo, 21-0.

And didn't they beat UCONN to get there one of those years?

LSU's QB was the #1 pick in the 07 draft. That wasn't the perception at the time. People didn't have that perception until years after he left.

Yes

In 2007, Pokey's team beat #4 UCONN 73-50

I miss those days

Lets riot for Pokey

That would have been the year to win it all.

Possibly over confident after that win.

Yup, we ended up playing horrendous that next one vs Rutgers.

It is what it is, I want LSU back to the elite 8/final four days

We should have won it the year we had Temeka, Seimoine, and Sylvia on the same team.

Starkey coached that game..fyi..but was Pokey's team...BTW Pokey cost us at least one NC game chance-she changed the line-up between 8 and final four in favor of "one of her girls" and we got beat...another reason you cannot mix coaching with players...it came back to bite us...

True, but the perception was a direct result of the Jefferson/Lee years, IMO. I think Perilloux ends up being a stud at QB. Lee or Jefferson, probably both have an opportunity to develop into better QBs instead of having to go in under pressure and develop bad habits. Honestly, after Mett, if either Jennings or Harris pan out, probably means that the perception is altered as well.

Lot of good things mentioned but the Oklahoma St. / Iowa State game in 2011 may be the biggest for the reasons mentioned and hangover effect that may still be lingering.

I somewhat agree with the Shaq/Chris Jackson team although they were so young (back when that was not as common) and only had one season together. It's not like it was a given to win it all.

Randy Livingston injury also a good one mentioned. If he was healthy, was he good enough to bring LSU another Final Four (or even championship?) and alter the program momentum that faded in the late 90s?

Hell to the yes! Forgot about that one. Bobby Knight beat a Rudy-less team. Could a better coach have won that game without Rudy? Doesn't matter now, but Rudy was unstoppable til that injury.

It was gonna work for Alabama no matter if Okie St won or lost. The establishment wanted it that way.

Having a bad Defense and nothing to show for the Mett, OBJ, Landry and Hill team always makes me sad.

That's too much god damned narrative. LSU is, can, and has been a CFB great. What are we prepared to do from here?
