There's more to it than being a freak athlete who was essentially a layup and put-back specialist on offense.

also, this is insanely fricking idiotic

Simmons was the best ball handler on LSU's team

upon his return, he is going to run PG for the sixers

20/12/5 56% from the floor, 2 steals a game "put-back specialist."

If Johnny Jones had a brain and played Ben at the point instead of giving in to that baby Quarterman, we'd have probably seen something that would never be equaled again at LSU. If Hornsby is available that whole season so that we could sit Quarterman until he snapped out of being such a bitch, that team has a different path, I believe.

Simmons was misused all year long. Quarterman had no business even seeing the court in certain games. It was painfully obvious he was forcing the issue. I witnessed it live and in color multiple times.

Which takes us to the other issue of depth.

Playing a guy with that ability to pass and create at the 4 just so Quarterman can chuck ill-advised early shot clock threes was so fricking stupid.

What would those numbers have looked like had he not been on the block? More assists for sure, but he'd have been lucky to hit the backboard from outside of 11 feet.

They tried him at the point early in the season and the problem was defenses could basically just ignore him until he tried to drive to the goal.

To be an effective point you have to be at least some threat to shoot. Even if we're only talking 25%, you've got to be able to draw defenders out to the perimeter.

The fact is Ben couldn't do that last year because he was no threat to shoot from the perimeter. I'm sure the Sixers will teach him to shoot and he'll make a great NBA player, but he was very limited offensively at LSU due to his inability to shoot the ball.

Mickey's defense pretty much willed us into the tournament his final year here.

Outside of blocking shots, his defense provided the exact opposite (in terms of individual impact).

I think Giannis Antetokounmpo already proved that a closed-minded analysis such as this one is folly.

Scored at will, but behind Mickey for me because he was weak defensively.

What? He was 2nd in the sec in steals per game.
He also rebounded better than Mickey by 2 rpg.

Simmons was by far the more productive player.

Rondo was pretty good pg when he cares.

Magic didnt have great outside shot.

Neither did lebron.

Apparently not, judging by this thread

Just because Posty McPosterson thought Shane Hammink really hustled on in-bounds plays and that Anthony Hickey's steals contributed more to the 2013 squad doesn't make them better than Benson.

I always thought Martin was under appreciated.

Defense - Martin was better. Simmons was horrible
Rebounding - Simmons slightly better
Shooting - Martin by far
Passing - Simmons

The team was better with Martin. I understand the Mickey impact but if you remember Mickey was awful at the end of that season. Also while being a great shot blocker, he was not a good on ball defender. Keep in mind that Simmons team added Victor and Blakeney. So on paper they were thought to be better.

But the main reason I would argue Martin had a greater impact was he allowed us to have better spacing on offense. Simmons offered no threat of hitting an outside shot so everyone could just sag into the paint.

I think he should have been in the post. What good is it to have a 6-11 point forward standing by the 3 point line when he can't shoot?

What's more impressive? 2nd in the SEC in steals or 1st in the NCAA in blocks?

Simmons both in production and talent. His overall numbers were ridiculous. They unfortuantely get lost in the poor performance by the team.

JOBIII is #2 on my list. He was a two time All SEC 1st team player.

Mickey is #3, but I wouldn't argue if anyone had him #2. The only reason I put JOB ahead of him is JOB played well on a team ('12-'13) that had very little around him. Mickey always had a top-notch forward sharing the load in the front court.

What position do the players in question play? For instance, if Andre Stringer was fifth in the SEC in blocks, wouldn't that be amazingly impressive?
