For their times:

Van Buren
Cannon
Hilliard
Alexander
Faulk
Taylor
Robiske
Collins*

Or something like that.

I would agree that Hilliard, Cannon, and Faulk would have to be considered the greatest at LSU. In reference to Auburn's backs, I personally think Bo Jackson was the best running back ever at any level. His career cut short is as frustrating as Barry Sanders.

Dalton Hilliard -

He did some great things w/ LSU and for a short time w/ the Saints.

He was at one point the all time leading scorer in both LSU & New Orleans Saints history!

He's the all-time all purpose yards leader in the history of the greatest conference in college football. Almost 1,000 more yards than the next closest player. 5th in the history of college football. All this while spliting carries with Kendall Cleveland his freshman year and Mealey for the next three years. Billy Cannon could have won ten Heismans and run a 1.94 100 yd dash, he's not even in the top ten rushers at LSU. Faulk is head and shoulders above everyone else and only Hilliard and Alexander should even be compared to him.

1st Billy Cannon

2nd Charles Alexander

3rd Dalton Hilliard

4th Kevin Faulk

The rest:
Steve Van Buren
Jimmy Taylor
Joseph Addai
Harvey Williams
Terry Robiskie
Domanick Davis
Brad Davis
Jesse Fatherree

For those that do not know Alexander played behind Terry Robiskie for 2 years, in every game LSU lead by more than 2 TD's his Jr. and Sr. year he was pulled out of the game most everytime. Mac never believed in running up the score, that night in 1977 when LSU beat Rice 77 to 0, Alexander was pulled very early and LSU went to passing as Rice could not stop the run.

Alexander could have had more than 1 400 yard game had he not been pulled in those routs.

Charles Alexander you will notice is 1 of only 2 consensus 2 time All Americans at running back, the other is not Kevin Faulk it is Billy Cannon.

Alexander is also running behind at the time, what was called a weak SEC line.

Of the backs on the above list Steve Van Buren is running behind the weakest line for his time at LSU.

The backs with the best lines Jospeh Addai, Harvey Williams, Kevin Faulk and Jesse Fatherree for thier time at LSU.

Doc Fenton would be on the list had he not played at E and QB, because he is a rb playing QB.

Cecil Collins was a beast. Looking back, in my opinion, he looked to be on steroids.

Here is a link as to what his carrer has gone to.

Having followed Alexander's career at LSU closely, I can say that he was a big disappointment. I mean, he accomplished a lot, but did not meet people's expectations, particularly his senior year. The best way to describe his skills is to look at his 5-6 year career at Cin. Bengals, in which he played fullback in front of a huge TB named Johnson (?) and was a slam mouth player. Straight ahead with power. He played behind Terry Robiske for two years and was not Robiske's equal, even in spite of the fact that Terry was slightly smaller and a lot slower. Alexander's stats may merit him to be in the top 5, but not his skill level. Harvey Williams (even after his surgery), Dominick Davis, and Toefield (before his injury) were much better. Sorry, Charles the Great wasn't that great.

Then you should know that he fought severe hamstring injuries in both legs during his senior year and much of his professional career. Certainly wasn't as "Great" after his Junior year when he was virtually unstoppable unless you put 9 in the box like the Bear. Much like Harvey Williams who never fully recovered his burst after the blown knee ending his soph. year. Toefield would fall into that same category. Good after the injuries but never great again.

The answers depends on the criteria.
However, the most talented running back that I have ever seen in an LSU uniform (going back to 1970's) is Cecil Collins. I have seen Herschel and Bo play in person several times each and Cecil was on their level.

Obviously, Cecil had other problems ....

Even healthy, Alexander wasn't the type of back that you would watch and say, "That guy is special!" Williams and Davis and Toefield and even Vicent would create some awe. I did forget about the hamstring deal. By the way, do you think Williams ,as a sophomore outshined Faulk's sophomore year???

One more thing about Alexander the Great--he was the last player the LSU AD made some kind of effort toward promoting for the Heisman. I remember the "Alexander4Heisman" bumper stickers.

Cannon was before my time, so CA is the best RB I've seen play at LSU. Guy was 6'1", about 220 lb., and ran a sub 4.4 40, a great blend of speed & power that was practically unheard of for RBs back in the 70s. I've always thought he was just ahead of his time.

Kevin Faulk is in my opinion. Notice how he got better when Cecil came here. He could do it all and got better each year. That is why he has all of the records, he was not one dimensional.

My pics would be for a whole game Hilliard could do it all. 2nd would be Alexander on 4th and goal from the one I would take him over anybody at LSU including Hester who was also great in short yardage but I take Alexander slightly over him. After that would be Faulk and Robiskie. Didnt see Cannon but obviously up there along with Jim Taylor and Steve Van Buren.

Best short yardage Alexander, Hester.
Best receivers out of backfield Hilliard, Faulk, Eddie Fuller. Fuller would line up in the slot and was unstoppable on the play they ran that shook the stadium. Money play for him and Hodson.

Hilliard is my favorite that I saw play at LSU. If you include NFL career, Jimmy Taylor would have to get some votes. If my memory serves me correctly he was the only NFL back to rush for 1,000 yds five season in succession at that time. They only played twelve game seasons and the greatest of them all, Jim Brown, never did that.
