Taylor would have to get some votes. If my memory serves me correctly he was the only NFL back to rush for 1,000 yds five season in succession at that time

Thought you might appreciate this general anecdote.

My highschool coach, an all SEC LB at MSU, who wasn't a big story teller, once said that Jimmy Taylor was the hardest back to bring down that he ever played against.

Accomplishments: Faulk
Talent: Cecil Collins
Best combination of the two: Cannon

*Edit: and yes I realize I gave Faulk the accomplishment nod even though Cannon has a Heisman and a title ring. Faulk's accomplishments go beyond championships and stretches for 4 years worth of all-SEC play.

Billy Cannon. For those who never saw Cannon, you need to know that he also played defense at times. In the game against Ole Miss(7to3)Cannon played linebacker and was responsible in keeping Ole Miss from scoring at the LSU one yard line.Cannon often played both offense and defense something that doesn't happen today.

Don't forget about Harvey Williams. He wasn't bad, either.

Even healthy, Alexander wasn't the type of back that you would watch and say, "That guy is special!"

What is your problem with Alexander? It can't be based upon facts because the fact is he was one of the greatest running backs ever at LSU.

I still say that Dalton Hilliard is the most amazing and effective RB I have ever seen at LSU during modern times

Dalton did amazing things, even sharing the backfield with future NFL back, Gary James. I would say that, IF the pantheon of "The Greats" at the RB position at LSU include these guys (in chronological order):

Jimmy Taylor
Billy Cannon
Jerry Stovall
Charles Alexander
Dalton Hilliard
Kevin Faulk

It's extremely hard to put Dalton above ANY of the other RBs on this list, and that is with the admission that Hilliard is probably my favorite among that group, with maybe Alexander a close second.

(Full disclosure: I've only seen the first three play on film.)

Ace Midnight,
Not many LSU fans left today that saw Billy, Jerry or Jimmy play at LSU.

I saw all three play pro football, and only film from their college games.

I have only seen the one film on Jesse so far, but have read up on every great the 33-39 teams played.

We do have a game film of Vandy and LSU 1935 coming soon.

But, I'll bite. Why has Auburn produced such an enormous stable of running backs over the years?

I actually have no idea. Just one of them things, I guess. Maybe it has to do with the fact that Dye was a "run the ball, damn it" kind of coach. So he made it a priority to build offensive lines that could play with the stamina needed to do that. Then he'd give the ball to one of the RBs 30 times a game.....and they would rack up a lot of yards.

By the way - any of you guys remember Sammy Martin? The great white hope from De La Salle who was a Tiger in the 80's. He was a blast to watch - he had speed too. A little trivia: in the movie Cocktail, there is a bar scene where Tom Cruise is talking to his Uncle in his Uncle's bar. On the TV above the bar in that scene is an LSU game where you can clearly see Sammy running the ball for a few plays!

And to comment on all of the Cecil the Diesel comments in this thread....I concur. He smoked AU one year for nearly 240 yds, and I just sat there thinking "this guy is unstoppable". What a shame that his head was a mess.

CreoleAubie,

Sammy Martin was a good back, he was LSU's real first slot man. Very fast and when shifted out of the back field to the slot, like Harvey no lb could match his speed; which lead to some very long passing plays for LSU.

Admittedly I wasn't around for this, (my dad wasn't even born yet) but yesterday I read part of Dietzl's book, and it said that this was the game that the chinese bandits got their identity. Specifically this series. So, LSU fumbles and it gets returned to 1st and goal, and Dietzl sent in the chinese bandits which held them to only a field goal.... Cannon was on white team.

Are you sure that Cannon was playing defense at this time?? I only ask because I read this just yesterday. Maybe white team played 1st down then the chinese bandits went in for 2nd - 4th??

cannon number one in hardware and in legend (heisman, halloween).
faulk number one in stats.
diesel number one in coulda been.

on a personal note, i was a freshman in 97. i made the road trip to stark-vegas when the diesel took over for 2.5 quarters.
next week, 230 vs auburn. i had very low seats for the game, and i saw him run away from players all game. he just had another gear. he was big, strong and fast. he is, to this day, the best player i have seen in a tiger uniform. but he blew it.

kfaulk dominated while at lsu, and he has managed to hang around the league as a valuable third down back for 10 years now. every year, you see kfaulk have a 2 td game as a role player in a huge game. plus i have a nice tiger stadium print with kfaulk's autograph...

so, since i never saw cannon play and because i have kfaulk's autograph,
i vote for kfaulk

Faulk may be the all time leader, but I think that my point is reinforced even more but the fact that he has not been as effective in the NFL as Hilliard was.

So do you want the best LSU RB or the best NFL career by an LSU RB ?

I would say Hilliard #1, Faulk,Cannon T#2.I only saw cannon on film. My dad always tells this story about the one time Charley Mac let Tommy Casanova play tailback in the spring game, says he was the best ever.Does anybody else remember this, pops says he ran for 300 yds.

The Bandits made a stand earlier in the game that held the Rebels to a FG, which resulted in the 3-0 Ole Miss lead when Cannon made his famous punt return. After that, with a minute or so to go in the game and down 7-3, Ole Miss had the ball near the goal line again, but this time having to go for the TD becaue they were trailing by 4 so late in the game. That was when Cannon helped make the stop on 4th down that preserved LSU's 7-3 win, and his Heisman Trophy.

However, I was under the impression that the Bandits had featured prominently in the '58 Championship Season the year before, so I'm not sure how a series in that game could have given birth to their "identity." I obviously would not question Dietzl on this, but just confused how the timing works out.
