Eric Hill or even further back Tommy Casanova

Stovall was better than both

If Mathieu plays a 3rd season there isn’t even a debate. Hell I don’t think there is a debate as is, Honey Badger is something we will never see again.

Would love to read the thread but not feeling it at the moment so using just my eyeballs and who I feel was better, Msthieu. '11 was all about him. He realistically maybe should've won the Heisman. He was the best player that year and it wasn't that close.
Love PP7 but believe he was somewhat overrated as a cover guy that college. He had great moments, the Bama int that wasn't for one, but his greatest feats were the punt returns.
Just saying I choose Mathieu.

The focus on DB’s is because of age of the posters. Best defensive players in the last 40 years are Albert Richardson LBer, Michael Brooks LBer, Booger McFarland DL, Chad Lavalais DL, Glen Dorsey DL, PP7 and Honey Badger.

Tommy Cassanova. End of discussion.

Too many people don't understand it. May be the greatest college season of all time for one player.

Within 5 yards of the LOS: Mathieu
Beyond 5 yards: Peterson
Beyond 5 yards: Peterson

In 2008 they didn’t match up.
In 2009 Peterson thoroughly dominated him. About 70 yards of Julio’s 102 came on one play when Peterson was on the bench with cramps. And don’t forget Peterson, with the game on the line, took Julio’s lunch money, but the refs inexplicably ruled it out of bounds. 2009 was an arse-whipping of epic proportions.
In 2010 Julio had 10 catches for 89 yards. At least two of those catches were on third and short and Peterson shut that bitch down short of the first down. They repeatedly went to Julio to sustain drives, and Peterson repeatedly ended their drives, sometimes with a tackle short of the first down and sometimes with a pass breakup - except that one when the QB hit Julio on a quick slant over the goal. Peterson played it perfectly, arriving with the ball, but Julio hung on and got the TD. I’ve never been prouder of an LSU DB, and never has an LSU DB been asked to do so much.
What you are not considering is how heavily Bama relied on Julio beating his guy. They threw to him a lot. Many were short passes that are sure completions on which they rely on Julio to beat his man. Patrick Peterson handled him two years in a row. Game! Set! Match!
Pretty much sums it up perfectly. Peterson has owned Jones his entire career with one exception. And you can see how he responded after his failure.
Peterson v. Jones
2009 - 3 catches, 29 yards
2010 - 10 catches, 89 yards
2012 - 3 catches, 33 yards
2014 - 10 catches, 189 yards
2016 - 4 catches, 35 yards
quote:
According to Pro Football Focus, Peterson has not allowed 80 or more yards in 68 straight games, including the playoffs. That streak started the week after the Julio bomb. It’s also the longest such streak in the 13 years PFF has broken down such data.

Tommy Casanova is probably LSU's greatest football player ever, at worst he's #2 behind BC.
It's close between him and Patrick Peterson.

Niether Cassanova nor Billy Cannon could even get any playing time right now at LSU. Todays player are heads and tails better then they were.
PP is a NFL Hall of Fame player first ballot.
Honey Badger had the best season of any DB in college football history.

quote:Agreed. Casanova was without a doubt a phenomenal football player in his time, but the change is talent from the last 60s to now is astronomical.

I'd like to see a list of prominent white college DBs in the past 20 years.
I can only think of 5:
Harrison Smith
Eric Weddle
Tommy Zozus
Jim Leonhard
Craig Steltz

Al Richardson was so solid for a long time. I know he’s not the best...but man he was consistently great his entire time at LSU.
Michael Brooks when healthy was the best I’ve seen.
