Mathieu:
Seasons: 2
Tackles: 133
TFL: 16
Sacks: 6
Interceptions: 4
Passes Defended: 16
Fumble Recoveries: 8
Forced Fumbles: 11
TDs: 2
Punt Ret. TDs: 2

Other accolades: Bednarik Trophy & finished 5th in Heisman voting

Peterson:
Seasons: 3
Tackles: 135
TFL: 3
Sacks: 0
Interceptions: 7
Fumble Recoveries: 0
Forced Fumbles: 0
TDs: 2
Punt Ret TDs: 2

Other accolades: Bednarik Trophy & Thorpe Trophy

What you won't see in stats, will be Peterson's ability to shutdown WRs/not a lot of balls thrown his way and Mathieu's ability to play virtually any position on defense and make a play. Discuss.

Man. That's tough. They were both so great for the LSU brand. Mathieu, all around game, maybe by a small margin, but PP7 was the best cover corner/DB.

Mathieu because he could play 3 positions. He was the only LSU defender to be on the Heisman Watch maybe ever. He is the best player i have seen in the 15 years of me watching LSU football. Since i was 4. I cried like a baby when i found out he got kicked off the team.

Peterson was better. Mathieu was great and more entertaining. The ability of Peterson to shut down the best receivers in the game is felt on every single defensive snap. He dominated Julio Jones twice. Reflect on that.

Peterson was better at coverage and locking down the other teams #1 receiver. Mathieu was better at roaming the field and wreaking havoc. No wrong answer here, but Mathieu was more of a game changer in my opinion.

It’s really hard to quantify PP’s impact bc he essentially just shuts down the opposition’s best WR.

Ok, sure.

In 2008: Julio had 7 catches for 128 yards & no TDs

In 2009: Julio had 4 catches for 102 yards & 1 TD

In 2010: Julio had 10 catches for 89 yards & 1 TD

Which 2 are the instances that Julio was shut down?

It’s funny but Mathieu is a better player

But Peterson is a better CB which is a position mathieu played most of his career.

But he was also an insane safety for a game. And when he played nickel he was almost like having an OLB who could cover, tackle and pass rush.

I dont believe we will ever see someone do what TM7 did. Pat was great/elite/whatever accolade you want to use. But TM7 was different

Peterson hard to compete with, but there were things Mathieu did that made me need to watch the replay 10x.

That strip six vs. Kentucky where he was flying at the QB, and turned mid-air around him to strip it before he hit the ground - just wicked stuff.

Peterson is the better pure CB.

But Tyrann was the better player.
