In 2009 wasn’t one of those catches for something like 70 yds and a TD when PP7 was off the field?

TM was arguably the most impactful defensive player in CFB history not just LSU. The number of TOs he caused and TDs he scored in his very short career is just mind boggling.

Yeah, Julio caught a short pass and housed it in 09 while PP was out and Brandon Taylor slid over to play CB.

Also, in 08, I’m pretty sure PP wasn’t quite a starter yet.

That said, I don’t know that he ever shut him down. 09 might be the closest. In 10 Julio got a TD on a late drive where it seemed we were playing off and trying to get them to burn clock.

PP7 stats might not have been that great because a lot of teams didnt throw his way.

Peterson was an all game type player.....

Honey Badger was a game changer on defense which is very, very rare.
Peterson was also phenomenal but I would go with TM.

Peterson was a physical specimen 6’1 220 and he was one of best NFL prospects LSU has had. A pure corner who can cover big WR like Julio Jones or AJ Green man for man. Mathieu was weaker on that with his size which is understandable but could stand his ground and take on anybody.

Mathieu had a smaller frame 5’8 175 pounds but unbelievable ball instincts and he made more plays than Peterson on the big stage. One of best defensive performances I have ever seen in defensive takeaways.

I would probably take Peterson over Mathieu in special teams but you obviously couldn’t go wrong with either one of them. They were both special there.

In terms of playmaking I think it’s Mathieu. In terms of the best defensive back physically it’s Peterson. Peterson did the things that don’t get on a stat sheet or on a highlight reel. He just shutdown one part of the field and it could be virtually anyone lining up against him. He would take one piece away without help over the top which helped us send more people than the offense could block.

TM7 is the best Overall player in LSU history, not just defense.

it would be hard to argue against this. I'm just not sure people understand what we witnessed.

Bingo ! Tommy was not only a 3 time AA, he was also a very viable Heisman candidate,as a 3 way player but he made the AA teams as a DB. With Jerry Stovall, hands down the best all around players in LSU history as both made AA, played all over the field both sides of the ball as well as returning punts and kicks, and both were Heisman candidates. (Stovall got screwed). PP7 close, though. TM perhaps the most exciting though TC had 3 PR for TD's in one game.

Tommy Casanova was my first LSU hero but I don’t recall him ever having three punt return touchdowns in one game. Perhaps you’re thinking of the two he had against Ole Miss but Craig Burns had the other that night. I remember that game very well.

Oh please. Tommy would've seen ZERO playing time had he been on any LSU team from 2008-2011.

That 2011 team does not make it to the BCS game without Mathieu. ... They don't even beat Georgia

Mathieu was the biggest disruptive force I have ever seen on a football field.

Bad take.

Thats like saying Pistol Pete wouldn't be as good in today's college basketball.

Players are judged compared to their peers, not compared to today.

would Tommy be a 3 time All American today? Probably not nut that doesn't change the fact that he was during his playing days.
