Pretty much this. His stat line was insane for any college player, much less a true freshman - 19.2 ppg (on 56% shooting), 11.8 rpg, 4.8 apg and 2.0 spg.
As for this "he didn't bleed p&g" nonsense, the guy literally could have played at any school he wanted to. If Johnny Jones coached as well as Simmons played, we would have been a S16 team.

Overall, though, Ben was outstanding at LSU. He lacked in leadership, and the film crew debacle was nonsense, but that decision shouldn't have been left up to Ben, who played hard (mostly) and well for LSU.
The fact that the injury which sidelined him this year was a Jones fracture is too ironic not to elicit a chuckle.

Quietly had a double double against the most talented team in the country. That is failing for him.
And I agree, he didn't take over those games, but it wasn't all on him. He was double teamed constantly. Any coach with a pulse would take advantage of this because it frees up other players.
And top opposing coaches were smart because they knew Ben was our lifeline so they attacked him early and often to get him into foul trouble, because they knew our offense was "pass the ball to Ben and see what happens".
If we had decent rotation, off ball movement, and could pass the ball effectively, Ben Simmons would've had even more ridiculous statistics.
I bet the NBA scouts watching his games and films were at a loss for words regarding Johnny's coaching. Just unreal.

There are some truly butthurt "fans" on here who still will blame Simmons for 2 seasons ago...despite the fact, well, looking at the facts. The dude had the best freshman year ever at LSU. Johnny Jones couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag.

Yep, people need to blame the system, not the players. This guy didn't even grow up in this country, dreamed of playing in the NBA, simply went to a college because it's the best option in terms of NBA exposure and draft-ability...he chose us because Johnny employed his godfather, a guy he felt comfortable around. Why anyone expected him to ooze purple and gold and pump us up like he would be a 4-year player is laughable. He gave us a great individual season, much like many 1 and dones do, and like many 1 and dones, moved on to the NBA and probably wont ever really care about the college they took a handful of classes at. Who cares? He still played well here, that's all that matters.

The Oklahoma game was shocking. Vitale and Musberger (I believe it was him) were begging, and I mean BEGGING, Simmons to step up. But he never did, and we watched Hield take over, like great players and leaders do. When Dickie V criticizes a player, you know it's bad, because Vitale has made a career of blowing players and coaches.
Simmons also passed up a game-winning shot against Marquette earlier in the year. Even the female color analyst couldn't believe it.

To be fair, Heild was an upperclassmen.
And for Marquette, he was a freshman PF with an average shot at best so he probably thought it best someone else take it. And in that game he had 23/20 sooo I don't think that rests on him.
People seem to forget he was a freshman.

This is getting extremely nitpicky. The kid was a freshman playing for a coach who had no idea what he was doing. He had an amazing season, you shouldn't expect a freshman to take over every single game and win it for you. He also obviously had no jump shot, so why would he take game ending shots? This would be like us expecting Shaq to take game ending jump shots. Would you rather a guy who cant shoot, shoot it, or a shooter?

Problem is that Quarterman thought he was that guy down the stretch, and he destroyed us with his awful 3 point shooting.
If you put good shooters around him, he'll excel. It was fun watching him in summer ball

The "freshman" excuse doesn't work in basketball. True freshmen, especially no. 1 NBA picks, can take over games and lead their teams. Happens all the time.
And he can't shoot a jumper, so I wouldn't expect him to launch an 18-footer for the win, but his game is getting to the rim, so GET TO THE RIM, and either finish or draw a foul. He was a decent free throw shooter, so get to the line.
But don't shy away from big moments.
